Mayor Greg Fischer Newsroom

Proposals Sought for Citywide Alert System

Friday April 1, 2011

As Mayor Greg Fischer pledged, Metro Government today requested proposals from companies for an alert system that can be used citywide to keep citizens better informed about emergencies.

In its request to companies, the city is seeking an Emergency Contact and Notification System that could be used to alert citizens citywide or in specific neighborhoods; that could target landline phones and cellphones; use text messaging and emails; and could reach residents who speak a foreign language or are blind or hearing impaired, among other features.

Fischer committed to improving emergency communications to all citizens following the March 21 explosion at Carbide Industries in Rubbertown.

“We are moving forward quickly and efficiently to implement the best system possible to keep our citizens informed 24/7,” Fischer said.

Vendor proposals are due by April 29. A committee will then review the proposals and negotiate a contract with a selected company by about July 1.

The city’s request for proposals was issued online through the DemandStar system and is available through the city’s website at: http://www.demandstar.com/supplier/bids/agency_inc/bid_list.asp?f=search&mi=192646.
