Fischer Named Chair of Economic Committee for Conference of Mayors

Wednesday July 18, 2012

Mayor Greg Fischer has been named chairman of the Metro Economies Standing Committee of the United States Conference of Mayors.

The committee focuses on economic issues important to cities, including federal policies, taxes and job creation.

Fischer is attending the summer mayor’s meeting this week in Philadelphia, where sessions include discussions about sustainability, education reform and the growth of American manufacturing. He also is leading a session on pension reform in cities. The growth in pension costs each year has contributed to Louisville Metro’s budget shortfalls – and most American cities face similar problems.

“The topics discussed and debated at the conference will help inform our goals of making Louisville a healthier city, both in terms of the economy and green issues,” Fischer said. “The conference and its leaders will be teeming with ideas that I can bring back to Louisville.”

During the conference, the attendees will develop a bi-partisan platform for the 2012 presidential campaign. The U.S. Conference of Mayors is a nonpartisan organization for cities with populations exceeding 30,000.

Their summer meeting ends Friday.
