Dr. Judith “Judy” Green, wife, mother, medical professional, children’s, and civic activist, has been actively involved in the uplifting and betterment of people in the Metro Louisville area all of her adult life. Now for the first time, she enters the field of elected government/public service. Dr. Green was elected to serve as District 1 Councilmember in the 2006 May Primary. She ran unopposed in the November election, and was sworn in as the 3rd person to occupy the office of District 1, in January 2007.

District 1 includes the areas of Lake Dreamland, Cane Run Road, Campground Road, Bells Lane, south to Lower Hunters Trace, in South West Louisville. Shawnee, Chickasaw, Russell, California, Park DuValle neighborhoods, as well as, part of the Portland neighborhood is included within the Western boundaries of District 1. District 1 covers much of the Western half of Metro Louisville, south of Broadway to Southwestern Parkway, along the Watterson Expressway, to the Cane Run Road area.

During her 1st year on the Metro Council, Councilwoman Green served as Vice-Chair of the Parks, Libraries, and Zoo committee. She also served on the Public Safety and Minority Affairs committees. In 2008, Dr. Green was elected as Vice-Chair of the Democratic Caucus. She currently serves on the Budget, Health & Human Needs, and Transportation & Public Works Committees.

A native of Henderson, Kentucky, Councilwoman Green has been married to James P. Green for 30 years. She is the proud mother of a very large and successful family, boasting of 2 biological children, and 11 adopted children. In the last two years, Dr. Green and her husband have been the foster parents of approximately twelve (12) teen-age boys. She has been a strong advocate for foster and adoptive parenting for at least twenty-five (25) years. “Children are our future and we must do all we can to help each one of them,” she says. As an elected public servant, I look forward to helping even more children succeed in life, as well as their entire families”.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Green has been a practicing Dentist in offices located on West Broadway Street, and Cane Run Road, both being within the boundaries of District 1. She is a 1987 graduate of the University of Louisville Dental School, and she received her Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene Science from U of L, in 1978.

Among her top priorities for District 1 are, quality of life issues involving toxic air and the air pollution problems around the Rubber Town area. Violence, gang related activities, and crime prevention are also on the top of her list of priorities and concerns. Councilwoman Green also wants to focus on bringing more economic development to District 1. Shortly after getting sworn in, Councilwoman Green began to lobby for, and ultimately achieved a $50,000 appropriation for the Project One program, that places over 1000 young people on summer jobs. She recently created jobs for youth in District 1 by forming a District 1 “Green Clean Team”. This team of District 1 youth were hired as ambassadors for a clean District 1. These youth ambassadors worked to keep District 1 clean and free of litter and debris. During the summer of 2008, Councilwoman Green was able to hire approximately 40 youth from throughout the District 1 area to serve on the “Green Clean Team”. Dr. Green has also expressed a definite affinity in working with the JCPS school district to help close the educational gap of at-risk children in Metro Louisville. She has placed strong emphasis on mentoring District 1 students, by teaching the U.S. Constitution to all of the 5th grade students that attend a District 1 school, volunteering as “Principal for a Day” at several of her District 1 schools, and appropriating funds for playground equipment, and other programmatic endeavors for the schools within the District 1 boundaries. In 2009, she will begin the formulation of the “District 1 Scholars” program, in which students that reside in District 1 or attend a District 1 school, will be exposed to and learn the machinations and workings of the local, state, and the national government systems. Councilwoman Green hopes to take the “District 1 Scholars” on a trip to the White House, in Washington, D.C. Her ultimate goal is to help these scholars obtain their own personal computers, and to appropriate $1000 scholarships for one or two of the “District 1 Scholars”.

Dr. Green has served as a Regional Member at Large of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and as a national board trustee of the Jack and Jill’s Foundation. Jack and Jill is a service organization which seeks to improve the social, civic, and educational attainment of African American children. She is a member of the Eta Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. As a 1994 graduate of Leadership Louisville, she has served as a 1995 Bingham Fellows, and a 1996-98 past board member, and a recently named board member of the Leadership Louisville Foundation. She also was recently selected as one of Leadership Louisville’s 100 Wise Women.

Dr. Green has been the recipient of many awards, honors, and recognitions throughout her adult career. She has been named the 2009 Childfriend of the Year by the Home of the Innocents of Louisville.The most important honors and awards she has received have been directly related to her work with children, youth, and family issues.

She is a member of the St. Stephens Baptist Church, where she serves as a Decision Counselor for those persons seeking to give their life to Christ.
