Louisville – The 2013 Dirt Bowl will conclude this weekend with a new champion set to be crowned on the basketball court of Shawnee Park on Sunday, August 11th.

In honor of this classic sporting event in West Louisville, the District 5 Free Friday Night Family Film Festival in the Park has a very special movie on Friday, August 9th .

“The locally produced “Dirt Bowl: The Tradition. The Journey. It Lives in Me,” produced by WeCU Productions, will be our feature film for the evening,” says Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5). “For anyone who has fond memories of the Dirt Bowl, as either player or spectator, this free film will be something for the entire family to enjoy.”

For the last several years, Councilwoman Hamilton has sponsored free movies during the summer for the community in various parks in District 5.

All of the Friday night movies in August are shown at the Bather Sports Complex in Shawnee Park on Southwestern Parkway at West Market Street beginning at dusk.

The Dirt Bowl began in 1969 as a basketball summer league competition. Many talented local players participated in the event over its long history. In this film, the history and tradition of the event is told by basketball legends such as Darrell Griffith, Derek Anderson, Phillip Bond, Denny Crum, Dallas Thorton, Janis Carter Miller and many more.

“The Dirt Bowl is something of pride for the people of West Louisville and this year 17 teams began the competition,” says Hamilton. “We felt this documentary was just a natural fit for the spirit of the weekend.”

For more information about the District 5 “Free Friday Night Family Film Festival in the Park,” contact Councilwoman Hamilton’s office at 574-1105. The final movie at Shawnee Park this summer will be shown on Friday, August 16.

In the event of rain, the movie will be shown at the Shawnee Golf Course Clubhouse at 460 Northwestern Parkway.
