Sustainability Committee to Learn about Urban Heat Island on 01/24/13

Wednesday January 23, 2013

Louisville – On Thursday, January 24, Lauren Anderson, Executive Director of Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District will address the Committee on Sustainability about the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and how it relates to Louisville.

According to the U.S. EPA, the Urban Heat Island effect describes how urban areas are hotter than nearby rural areas. These warmer temperatures in cities can cause increased summer energy demand for air conditioning, increase illnesses related to the heat, and can affect air quality.

Research by Dr. Brian Stone of the Georgia Institute of Technology projects that Louisville will lead the nation in heat-related deaths by the end of this century if the urban heat problem is not mitigated.

There are several steps that can be taken to limit the Urban Heat Island effect, and Ms. Anderson will report on some of the work, both in effect and being proposed, here in Louisville.

The committee meeting will take place at 3:00 pm Council Chambers, 601 W. Jefferson Street, and is open to the public. The meeting will be broadcast live on Metro TV, Time Warner Cable Channel 25 and streamed live on line at
