District 11 Update - Criminal Activity in the Furman Boulevard/Highgate Springs Neighborhood Area

Many of you have read about the recent criminal activity in the Furman Boulevard/Highgate Springs Neighborhood area. Over the past several weeks, there have been several serious incidents including two rapes and an attempted kidnapping on Radiance Road.
Councilman Kramer and several other area council representatives met with the 6th Division of the Louisville Metro Police Department to discuss the recent activity. The 6th Division is currently working with area neighborhood leaders and area block watches to ensure that residents are aware of the situation and staying alert.
We will continue to keep you informed on this situation. In response to the recent activity, the District 11 office will send out periodic crime reports from the 5th and 6th Divisions of the Louisville Metro Police Department. If you would like to receive these via email, please call the office at 574-1111 or email us at graham.honaker@louisvilleky.gov

Metro Council Helps Raise Funds for Fern Creek/Highview Ministries

On January 19, members of the Metro Council and Council staff took on the St. Gabriel Men's Club in basketball. This event helped raise $5,000 for the Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries Capital Building Project Fund. This year the Council squad was soundly defeated (to protect the innocent, we will not print the score!), but the team has vowed revenge in 2009!
Third Youth Opportunity Showcase will be held on Saturday, February 9
Employers to offer 1,000 jobs for teens, young adults

The third annual Youth Opportunity Showcase, which gives teens a chance to apply for jobs, as well as learn about volunteer and recreation opportunities, will be held on Saturday, February 9. This event will be held at the Muhammad Ali Center, 144 N. 6th St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants and their parents or guardians may tour the Ali Center for free.
Young adults ages 16 to 21 can apply for hundreds of jobs with employers including Kentucky Kingdom, Kroger stores, Home Depot, Louisville Metro Government, Marriott Hotels and Norton Healthcare.
Some of the jobs are for the summer, but most of the jobs are for year-round work available for youth. Computer stations will be available for youth to apply for jobs. Career and college preparation resources will be available.
Young adults and teenagers interested in applying for jobs should dress for an interview, bring identification and have several copies of their resume. Parents of middle school students can pick up information about summer camps, and young teens can sign up to volunteer at the Louisville Science Center.
“Youth in this community have a great chance to build their resumes by working for some of the premier employers in Louisville,” said Michael Gritton, executive director of KentuckianaWorks. “These jobs are also great opportunities to learn on-the-job skills and focus on a possible future career.”
The Youth Opportunity Showcase is being coordinated by the Louisville Metro Office of Youth Development. It is sponsored in part by Kentuckiana Works, the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training and the Muhammad Ali Center. For more information about the Youth Opportunity Showcase contact MetroCall at 311 or visit www.louisvilleky.gov.
Mayor, Police Offer Tips to Prevent Identity Theft

Identity theft continues to affect hundreds of families in Louisville each year, and Mayor Jerry Abramson has encouraged individuals to safeguard their financial health in the new year by protecting their personal information.
LMPD Fraud officers offer several tips for citizens to keep their identities safe:
· Remove mail from your mailbox as soon after delivery as possible.
· Deposit outgoing mail in street mailboxes or at your local post office instead of your home.
· Never give personal information over the telephone.
· Shred any documents with personal information such as pre-approved credit applications, credit card receipts, bills and other financial information.
· Obtain a copy of your credit report once a year to check for unusual activity.
· Check your financial statements in a timely manner, and immediately report any charges you don’t recognize to your financial institution.
· Report all lost or stolen credit cards, checks or driver’s licenses.
· Memorize your Social Security number, and never carry the card in your wallet.
· Beware of mail or telephone promotions offering instant prizes of awards. (If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.)
