Relia Bailey Named Outstanding Leader in District 11

Relia Bailey, Executive Director of the Canaan Community Development Corporation, was honored as an outstanding leader in Metro Louisville. Ms. Bailey was honored at the February 28th Black History Month celebration at City Hall. Broadcasts of this cermony will be re-aired on Metro TV (cable channel 25) on Friday, February 29 at 11 pm and Saturday, March 1 at 10 pm.
Ms. Bailey has been instrumental in leading numerous community service programs at Canaan including: free income tax assistance, financial literacy, career and education programs, computer literacy skills, and many others. Ms. Bailey has assisted the District 11 in many capacities, most recently helping us address issues and concerns in the Mid Dale Lane - Klondike Lane corridor.
We congratulate Ms. Bailey on this honor and thank her for her service!
Scheduled MSD Work for Spring 2008

1) Chimney Rock Lane - clean approximately 35 feet of paved channel at the southwest corner of 2928 Chimney Rock Lane. Regrade approximately 150 feet of earthen channel from the end of the paved channel to the southwest corner of 2924 Chimney Rock Lane.
2) Cutter Drive - Regrade the cross drain from 6205 Cutter Drive, approximately 50 feet.
3) Dolphin Road - Need to install an 8 inch trench drain in the driveway apron at 4212 Dolphin Road.
4) Eastside Drive - Regrade 30 feet of roadside swale from the driveway at 3217 Eastside Drive to the existing headwall.
5) 3606 Eastside Drive - Regrade swale from 3606 to 3604 Eastside Drive, approximately 80 feet.
6) 3302 Enridge Drive - Regrade approximately 575 feet from 3304 Enridge Drive to the catch basin at 3318. Install trench drains and driveway aprons at 3306 & 3304 Enridge. Remove 45 feet of trees from 3302 & 3304. Also replace driveway apron at 3310.

Extra Money Now Available to Keep Louisville Families Warm
Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program Has Helped 7,000 Residents
New money is available to help Louisville residents with their heating bills. As part of its Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the Community Action Partnership (CAP) will help restore heat to residents’ homes or prevent their heat from being disconnected. CAP recently announced the conclusion of this winter’s funding cycle. But the new money is now available, thanks to a reallocation from the United States Department of Energy. About $1.3 million already has been pledged to help Louisville families stay warm.
Residents can apply for the heating assistance on a first-come, first-served basis at the Urban Government Center, 810 Barret Avenue, Monday-Friday beginning at 8 a.m. Applicants must bring the following:
1. Picture ID
2. Social Security cards for each person in the household
3. Proof of previous month’s gross income (current award letter, all previous month’s pay stubs, etc.) or zero income statement (food stamp award letter, termination letter, etc.)
4. Crisis Verification
-Current disconnect notice (brown bill) from LG&E,
-Within four days of running out of bulk fuel (propane, fuel oil, etc.) or
-Eviction notice from the landlord, if utilities are included in your rent.
Individuals unable to make an application in person may send someone with a signed statement who knows their situation. The same information is required for homebound applicants.

Graduate Greater Louisville: New Education Initiative Encourages People To Finish College

The campaign, “Graduate Greater Louisville,” will attempt to reach the 177,000 people in the 13-county Louisville Metropolitan Area who have some college but never earned their degree.
Graduate Greater Louisville is a joint partnership between Greater Louisville Inc, the metro chamber of commerce; Kentuckiana Works, the local workforce development agency; the Mayor’s Office and 23 colleges and universities on both sides of the Ohio River.
A series of workshops will allow people to apply for federal financial aid while at the same time getting free help with their tax returns (see dates and times below). Graduate Greater Louisville also has a website, www.graduategreaterlouisville.com, and a toll-free number that people can call to re-enroll and find financial aid — 1-877-GO-4-GRAD.
In addition, the Kentuckiana College Access Center, an agency of Kentuckiana Works, has a one-stop center for people interested in returning to school. The center is located at 200 W. Broadway, seventh floor. The access center is staffing the 1-877-GO-4-GRAD number.
Diabetes Classes, Support Group Offered by Public Health & Wellness
Individuals interested in learning about and managing diabetes are invited to attend a series of four free classes being offered by the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness. Classes begin Thursday, March 6 at the Central Government Center, 7201 Outer Loop.
Classes are free and attendance at the entire series of four classes is encouraged. All classes begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Phone 574-6663 for reservations or for more information. Class size is limited so please call to make a reservation. The class schedule is as follows:

NatureScape Grants Available
Brightside strives to find ways for all Louisville residents to become engaged in keeping our community clean, green and beautiful. NatureScape Grants are designed to help neighborhood groups and other non-profits keep the public spaces of the community looking its best by connecting your group with the needed resources to create the beautification project of your choosing.
NatureScape Grant Applications are now available at www.brightsideinc.org. Submission deadline is April 2, 2008.
Tips: Brightside is particularly interested in landscape projects that green-up our community. This might include planting trees in your neighborhood or creating a welcoming landscape for your subdivision entrance. NatureScape grants can also be used to fund cleanup projects for your area. Brightside Community Wide Cleanup is March 29

As part of the ongoing community-wide anti-litter initiative we are asking you to give Louisville an assist! Join us for Brightside’s next Community-Wide Cleanup (CWC) on Saturday, March 29. This spring cleanup is held in conjunction with the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Cleanup Week March 23-29. Students in K-12 are asked to participate in the 2008 art contest; we want to focus on waste reduction–cutting down on the amount of trash that goes in the garbage and on to the landfill. Committee Meetings
Councilman Kramer is a member of the Budget Committee, Accountability/Audit Committee, Appropriations Committee, and Committee on Committees. In addition, Kramer serves as the Chairman for the Metro Council Minority Caucus. Committees meet the first and third weeks of the month and are broadcast live on Metro TV (cable channel 25.) Councilman Kramer is also a member of the National League of Cities Information, Technology, and Communications Steering Committee and the Kentucky League of Cities Legislative Committee.
