April 24 Forum will focus on District 11 History

On Tuesday, April 24, Councilman Kramer will sponsor a forum to discuss history in District 11. This forum will be a followup to the recent "Eleven Historic Homes in District 11" television program. Panelists for the forum will include owners of these historic homes and several local historians from the Buechel, Hikes Point, and Jeffersontown areas. Councilman Kramer will moderate the discussion as panelists will elaborate on the historical significance of the area and address questions from the audience.

New Ventilation Technique to Save Lives
More EMS responders able to re-establish breathing for cardiac-arrest patients

Cardiac-arrest patients in Louisville will have a better chance of survival thanks to the skilled use of a small plastic tube and a tiny balloon. Louisville Metro EMS has trained its emergency medical technicians and paramedics in the use of the King Airway, a new medical device used to re-establish breathing when time is critical.
Using the new device, Louisville Metro EMS will have more than 2½ times the previous number of first responders in the field with the skills and capability to re-establish breathing in cardiac-arrest situations.
Louisville Metro EMS has trained its full complement of EMTs and paramedics in the use of the new airway device and has incorporated the procedure into the training for all new hires. EMTs will use the device to more effectively ventilate patients who are in cardiac arrest and not breathing. Paramedics may also use it as a secondary “rescue” device for other complicated respiratory failure when conditions make it difficult to perform the more highly technical intubation procedure.
EMS officials have coordinated with all area hospitals so that emergency-room physicians are prepared to receive patients with the device. EMS chief executive Neal Richmond said other EMS services in the region are working with Louisville to learn how best to introduce use of the new airway device.

Lawnmower Rebate Helps Make the Air Cleaner, Yards Greener
Get $100 to switch from gas-powered lawn equipment

Louisville residents can make the air cleaner and their yards “greener” with the Lawn Care Rebate Program offered by the Kentuckiana Air Education program (KAIRE).
The program offers Louisville residents up to $100 for trading in a gasoline-powered mower toward the cost of an electric, battery or reel (manual) mower.
Rebates are available for other lawn maintenance equipment including electric string trimmers, leaf blowers, and replacement batteries. Instant rebates are available at local participating retail outlets, which are listed on the District’s website.
Equipment may be purchased and Standard Rebates (without gasoline-powered trade-in) requested any time of year, but the Louisville Metro Recycling Facilities only accept lawn care equipment for recycling (for Bonus Rebates with trade-in) from March 1 through September 30.
Nearly 4,000 Louisville residents have taken advantage of the rebate program since it began.
KAIRE is a community outreach effort of the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District. For more information call 574-5322 or visit the District’s website: www.louisvilleky.gov/APCD .
