District 11 Residents Come Out for Town Hall Meeting

Approximately seventy-five District 11 residents attended a town hall meeting at the Canaan Christian Church on November 14. Residents were able to meet with representatives from the Police and Fire Departments, the Department of Inspections, Permits, and Licenses, MSD, LG&E, Operation Brightside, the Department of Neighborhoods, the Department of Public Works, and TARC.

Issues that were addressed included property maintenance in the Klondike/Mid Dale Lane area, speeding, street resurfacing, changes in TARC routes, pedestrian accessibility in District 11, and snow removal routes.

Councilman Kramer will hold another town hall meeting in the spring of 2007. Special thanks to Relia Bailey, Robert Holmes, and Canaan Christian Church for hosting the meeting.

Four Seasons Neighborhood Association
Chairman Gains Valuable Insight at Regional Neighborhood Networking Conference

On Thursday, October 5, 33 delegates from area neighborhood associations arrived in Bowling Green, Kentucky for the Regional Neighborhood Network Conference. Other attendees were from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The program offered many opportunities to learn how to handle various challenges and organizational problems. Some of the workshops I attended included: "How To: Neighborhoods 101" which dealt with how associations can use welcome packets and monthly newsletters to promote their organizations. "Seeding for Tomorrow: Preparing Our Youth to Carry on the Civic Process" covered how to get young people to understand zoning issues, interact with city officials, and learn civic policy. "Opportunities for All Ages: Working with Local Police" presented how citizens can effectively work with the police department.

We also attended a workshop entitled "Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT)." We learned how local emergency responders, health department personnel, neighborhood groups, and others can come together to train and organize their own response teams in the event of a natural or manmade disaster.

The conference ended with the announcement that next year's conference will be held in Louisville. I am planning on attending this conference and recommend that anyone involved with a neighborhood association also attend if possible. For more information about this conference please contact the Department of Neighborhoods at 574-3380.

Four Seasons Neighborhood Association

Hikes Point Beautification Project Takes Shape

The Hikes Point Business Association is teaming with the District 11 Office, the Metro Development Authority, the Nicklies Development Company, and Operation Brightside to plan a beautification project at "The Point", the intersection of Taylorsville Road, Hunsinger Lane, and Hikes Lane in Hikes Point.

This project will coincide with a new Starbucks Coffee House being built in Hikes Point. Plans for the beautification project include the planting of a flower bed and the installation of a four-sided clock (see photo right.) Improved sidewalks will also be constructed around this area. This project is expected to be completed by February, 2007.

The Hikes Point Business Association is continuing to raise money for this project. Commenting on the project, HPBA President Debbie Williams said, "We are very excited about this beautification project and thrilled that the pulse of the Hikes Point business community will beat even faster now. The clock will be a great landmark for this area and we are very proud to be a part of this plan."

Anyone interested in working with the business association on their plans may contact President Debbie Williams at 458-3001.
Brightside Offers TreeMembrance Program

Brightside’s TreeMembrance Program provides a unique way for individuals to offer a memorial or distinctive gift as a tribute to a special love one.

For a donation of $500 you will receive a tree that will be located in a grove in one of three Louisville Metro Parks. In addition, a certificate will be sent to the person or family for whom the tree is dedicated along with a notification of the location of the grove where the tree will be planted.

Cox Park, McNeely Lake Park, and Sun Valley Park are the three Louisville Metro Parks locations available for planting your special tree. The species of the tree will vary depending on the location you choose.

For more information, you can contact Operation Brightside at 574-2613.
