Metro Council News

The December 20 Metro Council meeting was a busy one. The Council passed the following legislation:
- An ordinance that will limit aggressive panhandling. The ordinance provides for stipulations that prohibit panhandling within 20 feet of an Automated Teller Machine, within 20 feet of an outdoor dining or merchandise area, and within 20 feet of any school building or school playground.
- Revisions to last year's Animal Control Ordinance. These key provisions include removing sexually unaltered dogs from those considered at risk of becoming dangerous or potentially dangerous.
- Approved issuing $47 million in bonds for public improvements at the Museum Plaza project.
- A resolution that will encourage the Louisville Metro Health Department to educate the citizens of Louisville on the dangerous and harmful effects of trans fats.

- An ordinance stipulating that the U'SAgain corporation clearly indicate that their collection boxes are a for-profit venture. These boxes (several are in District 11) must clearly display a contact name and number and indicate that U'SAgain is not a charitable organization.

Metro Parks Designates Seven Parks for Winter Sledding
Tips Offered to Keep Sledding Safe and Fun
For thousands of local children – and quite a few adults, too – sledding is a highlight of the winter season. Metro Parks will open hills in seven parks for sledding from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on days when snow accumulation reaches 2-3 inches.
Metro Parks has selected its best and safest sledding hills in the area. In order to ensure that everyone using the selected hills has a safe and enjoyable experience, staff will be available at all sledding hills with first aid kits, and will promptly contact emergency services in the unlikely event of an accident. Additionally, staff will light and maintain bonfires when conditions are appropriate.
When snowfall occurs, Metro Parks employees will visit designated sledding hills to post an “open” or “closed” sign, depending on snow coverage at each location. As long as the sledding hills maintain adequate snow coverage, they will remain open. Park users are asked to avoid sledding when hills are closed. Sledding on slopes that lack appropriate snow depth will cause turf damage that must be repaired in the spring.
Designated Sledding Hills:
- Cherokee Park (Barringer Hill, intersection of Alexander Road and the Scenic Loop)
- George Rogers Clark Park (1024 Truston Avenue, behind playground, near McKinley Avenue)
- Joe Creason Park (1297 Trevilian Way, behind Metro Parks Administration building)
- McNeely Lake Park (6900 Cooper Chapel Road, near Korean War Memorial)
- Riverview Park (8202 Greenwood Road, along floodwall)
- Tyler Park (1501 Castlewood Avenue, on Tyler Park Drive side of the park)
- Charlie Vettiner Park - (5550 Charlie Vettiner Park Road, near Easum Road entrance)

“Re-gift” Christmas Trees After the Holidays
Metro Louisville will help residents recycle their “live” trees into nutrient-rich mulch. The trees will be mulched at no cost to residents after the holidays. Residents in the Urban Services District may deposit their trees and greenery curbside beginning Wednesday, December 26. Residents may also dispose of their trees at one of the city’s four Tree-Cycling Centers on December 26, 27, 28 and again on January 2, 3, and 4. All locations listed below are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
· Recycling Center - 595 Hubbards Lane
· Recycling Center - 7219 Dixie Highway
· Public Works Yard – 3528 Newburg Road
· Waste Reduction Center - 636 Meriwether Avenue
Residents living outside the Urban Service District may also utilize the drop off centers and should check with their private waste haulers to see if tree pickup service is available and when it will begin.
Christmas tree vendors may recycle their unsold trees on Friday, December 28 at the Hubbards Lane location.
People taking trees to the recycling sites are encouraged to bring containers to take home the fresh, evergreen mulch for use in the spring. The evergreen mulch performs particularly well for acid-loving plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons.
