Happy Holidays!

The District 11 Office wishes you and your family a very Happy Holiday Season!

Metro Council Update - December 19 Metro Council Meeting
(Message from Councilman Kramer)

After more than 8 hours of debate and dialogue, the Metro Council (by a vote of 16-8) approved a new version of the Metro Animal Ordinance. I joined 7 Council Republicans in voting against this 13th  revision of the ordinance, due to the significant number of legal and enforcement questions that were not answered in committee.

After efforts to send the newest version of this ordinance back to committee failed, I was left with little choice but to vote for almost one hundred needed changes and against a final version that had only been known publically for one hour prior to the start of the Council Meeting.

Due to the complexity of this ordinance, I am still reviewing the passed version to gain a complete picture of its effects. I will focus in the coming weeks on getting a better grasp of this final version and will work to get a summary to everyone following the holidays.

Until then, please know that I will continue to work with members of the Metro Council to work through some of the problems we believe exist in this ordinance. I will also continue to try to put focus on the enforcement of this ordinance.

28th Annual Donorama Holiday Blood Drive in Louisville Dec. 27-28

Every year, blood  donors disappear in the bustle of the holiday season. Many people are so busy with shopping, traveling and festivities that they simply forget about their normal routine of giving blood. Consequently, blood shortages typically follow the holiday season.

But the need for blood never takes a holiday. The American Red Cross estimates about 2.2 million patients in the U.S. will need a blood transfusion this season. The time between Christmas and New Year’s is especially critical for patients in the hospital for the holidays. Go ahead and celebrate the holidays. Just don’t forget to help us re-stock our shelves.

For the 28th consecutive year, the Red Cross will be holding a holiday blood drive and throwing a year-end party to ensure patients receive the blood they need to survive. After you’ve given your holiday gifts, take time to give back a gift that’s priceless—the gift of life.

WHAT: 28th Annual Donorama Holiday Blood Drive

WHEN: Wednesday, Dec. 27 & Thursday, Dec. 28 from 12 noon to 7 p.m.

WHERE: Executive West Hotel, 830 Phillips Ln., Louisville

WHY: 1,500 blood donors are needed to supply area hospitals immediately after the holidays

If you attend Donorama, you’ll receive an American Red Cross winter scarf. It’ll keep you warm long after your heartwarming gift of life. Donors will also receive a Holiday Hero lapel pin and enjoy a delicious hot meal, live music, child care and free parking.

If you are at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. All donors need to present positive identification. For more information, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit www.givebloodnow.org.

Re-Gift Trees After the Holidays!

Metro Louisville now offer a program to help residents recycle their “live” Christmas trees after the holidays. The trees will be recycled into nutrient-rich mulch at no cost to residents when Christmas comes to a close.

Any Louisville resident may dispose of their trees at one of the city’s four Tree-Cycling Centers on December 27, 28 and 29, and again on January 2, 3 and 4. All locations listed below are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

– Recycling Center – 595 Hubbards Lane

– Recycling Center – 7219 Dixie Highway

– Public Works Yard – 3528 Newburg Road

– Waste Reduction Center – 636 Meriwether Avenue

Tree vendors may recycle their unsold trees on Friday, December 29 at the Hubbards Lane location.

Persons taking trees to the Tree-Cycling sites are encouraged to bring containers and take home the fresh, evergreen mulch for use in the spring. The evergreen mulch performs particularly well for acid-loving plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons.

The tree recycling program is a Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management initiative. Brightside and Metro Public Works are also partners in the project.

For more information, please contact MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000, or visit LouisvilleKy.gov.
