Canaan Community Development Corporation and Councilman Kramer will Sponsor Computer Literacy Classes for Senior Citizens



Councilman Kramer and the Canaan Community Development Corporation will sponsor computer literacy classes for senior citizens beginning in March. These classes will focus on computer basics, basics of e-mail and the Internet, Internet banking, and how to use the Metro Louisville website.

The course will consist of two sessions per week, for four consecutive weeks (total of eight classes.) The classes will be held on Tuesday mornings and Friday mornings from 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. The course is limited to 15 senior citizens and is free of charge. All sessions will be held at the Canaan Christian Church, 2840 Hikes Lane. District 11 office staff will teach the courses.

Breckenridge Estates Resident Honored at Black History Month Celebration



On February 22, Breckenridge Estates resident Dow Buford was honored by the Louisville Metro Council at a ceremony commemorating Black History Month. Buford currently serves on the board with the Breckenridge Estates Neighborhood Association. His leadership was critical to the establishment of the association which now boasts over 400 members. Buford was also instrumental in the establishment of the Buechel Area Business Association. He walked door to door handing out promotional materials to Buechel businesses with the hopes of starting an association. The District 11 office thanks Dow Buford for all of his contributions to our community.

 "S.P.O.T." Clinic Comes to District 11



On February 19, District 11 residents brought their pets out to the S.P.O.T. (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today) clinic at Watterson Elementary. Rabies and licensing packages were offered for altered and unaltered pets.

Councilman Kramer and Councilman Robin Engel worked with Metro Animal Services on this event. Another clinic will be held at the McMahan Fire Station on March 1 from 4 pm to 7 pm. For more information, please call Metro Animal Services at 361-1318.
Internet Safety Seminar to be held on February 28

Councilman Doug Hawkins (District 25) will sponsor a free internet safety seminar on Wednesday, February 28 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This seminar will be held at the Jefferson Community & Technical College, Southwest Campus Auditorium (1000 Community College Drive.) Hawkins and Innovative Productivity, Inc. have partnered with Dr. Tony Sheppard, a specialist in child psychology, to host a two-hour seminar on internet safety. FBI Special Agent David Beyer will also speak on this issue. Case studies from Metro Louisville will be illustrated to demonstrate real-life threats.

Watterson Elementary Students Attend Animal Safety Classes



On Monday, February 12, Dr. Tami Bosco of Metro Animal Services led an Animal Safety and Care class for third graders at Watterson Elementary School. The program educated children on pet safety, in addition to properly caring for the well-being and good health of their pets.

Bon Air Teen Activities: The Myers Middle School Youth Service Center and the Community School have coordinated bi-monthly activities for teens who frequently visit the Bon Air Library. These activities, sponsored by local council person Ellen Call, are designed to assist the librarians with their Teen Tuesday program, as well as contribute to problem solving efforts being made by the librarians to help connect with teens and strengthen the local community. These programs are free.


March 3 Seminar will Address Lymphedema

The Lymphedema Support Group of Louisville will hold an educational seminar about this chronic, progressive disease on March 3, 2007 from 9 am to 3 pm. This event will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church located at 2233 Woodbourne Avenue. This day will include educational talks by area doctors. Suppliers of various garments will also be present that may be beneficial in patient treatment. A light lunch will be served.

Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid in the tissue area causing swelling in the affected area, most often the extremities (arms and legs). It can also occur in the face, neck, abdomen, or genitals. March 6 is National Lymphedema Awareness Day. Your support helped make last year's event a great success and we want to say thank you. We are in need of your support again this year, for our door prizes, and hope we can count on you. All sponsors names will be displayed the day of our event.

Borders and Greater Louisville Inc. will host Mommy Millionaire author

Kim Lavine, author of the recently published Mommy Millionaire, will speak at Borders Books (2520 S. Hurstourne Gem Lane, intersection of Hurstbourne and Taylorsville Rd.) on Thursday, March 1 at 7 pm. Lavine will offer real world advice, secrets, and lessons on how to make money while keeping family and her kids "Job #1." Summer Senior Games Seeking Volunteers




Sponsors of the 2007 Summer National Senior Games that will be held in Louisville from June 22 to July 7 are looking for more than 4,000 volunteers.

The games are expected to draw about 12,000 athletes age 50 and older to compete in athletic competitions. Volunteers are needed to help in operations, logistics, special events, public relations, administrative and other duties.

Volunteers registering before March 15 will be eligible for prizes and all volunteers will receive a t-shirt. To register as a volunteer, log on to www.2007seniorgames.com and click on "volunteers."

Councilman Kramer serves as the Chairman of the Public Safety Committee. He is also a member of the Budget Committee, Government Administration Committee, and Committee on Committees. In addition, Kramer serves as the Vice-Chair for the Metro Council Minority Caucus. Committees meet the first and third weeks of the month and are broadcast live on Metro TV (cable channel 25.) Councilman Kramer is also a member of the National League of Cities Information, Technology, and Communications Steering Committee and the Kentucky League of Cities Legislative Committee.
