Welch announces new “Quiet Zone” for homes in District 13

Residents who live along three railroad crossings in District 13 will soon realize things are a lot quieter in their neighborhoods because of what they are not hearing. Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13) announces a new “Quiet Zone” has been approved by the Federal Railroad Administration.
“This is welcome news for many people,” says Welch. “Many homes along this zone’s railroad route back up to the tracks. I am so pleased these residents will soon have peace and quiet for a better quality of life surrounding their homes.”
The quiet zone will cover railroad crossings at National Turnpike, New Cut Road and Outer Loop. Additional “NO TRAIN HORN” signage will be put in place under existing railroad crossing warning signs in the affected areas.
The Metro Public Works Traffic Planning Division has been working with the FRA for the designation. A review of the railroad crossings in the three designed areas shows compatibility with the federal requirements for a “quiet zone.” All of the crossings are modernized and able to safely handle traffic.
“While this is good news for neighborhoods, I must ask that motorists be mindful of this change,” says Welch.”Proper driving and obeying the law should still be a top priority when approaching any railroad crossing.”
The “Quiet Zone” will take effect on Monday, April 25th.
