Louisville – With the April 15th deadline passed, Councilwoman Cindi Fowler (D-14) is thanking everyone who participated in the 2013 VITA Program in Metro Louisville.
“Once again, we have helped low income families in our area receive the most benefit from their income tax returns,” said Fowler. “We have many dedicated volunteers who not only help prepare tax returns but serve as greeters and site coordinators as well. Without these wonderful people who unselfishly give of their time and talent this service would not be possible.”
For several years, members of the Metro Council have partnered with the Louisville Asset Building Coalition, A Metro United Way program to offset the cost of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A) program. With the use of Neighborhood Development Funds, the Council members have helped low income families receive all of the deductions to which they are entitled. The service is free to those making less than $50,000 annually.
The Sun Valley Community Center continued it participation in the program this year by filing 1,583 tax returns for area families. This is the most returns that have been filed in the six year history of the Center’s participation in VITA.
In 2012, the program filed 9,300 returns and in over a decade of service and has returned $82 million in total refunds to our community. VITA operates from January through October 15th.
“Low income families are the most impacted by the economic downturn and VITA not only helps them but returns millions of dollars to our local economy,” said Fowler.
Officials with VITA hope to have overall results from this year’s program by summer.
