Volunteer in District 19's Internship Program

I am offering non-paid student internship opportunities to District 19 students between the ages of 17 and 25. Students will be given an opportunity to work in my downtown office located in City Hall. The goal of the Volunteer Internship Program is to allow students to explore career choices within Louisville Metro Government while gaining real life experiences working with an elected official.

Volunteer Internship applications are now being accepted for positions beginning in January 2012.

What does an Intern do?

Job Description: Assists with administrative tasks and community outreach. Volunteers will research topics, handle phone calls, enter data, organize files, schedule appointments, draft correspondences, effectively use social media and represent the Councilman. Interns must be committed to work a minimum of 5 hours a week during normal office hours (Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

What are the prerequisites to apply?

· must reside in District 19 and be between the ages of 17 and 25.

· must be willing and able to travel downtown

· should have computer experience working with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer.

· are interested in pursuing a career in Law, government, social science, public policy, history, or political science.

· have some data base or spreadsheet experience and possess good organization skills.

What does the Internship Program offer?

· provides students with educational opportunities to gain valuable knowledge about the issues facing our community and local government.

· provides career exploration opportunities.

· gives students a better understanding of the roles of public servants and opportunities to work with many departments of Louisville Metro Government.

· provides networking opportunities with non-governmental organizations, such as 21st Century Parks, YMCA, and many other non-profit organizations.
