Dan Johnson was elected to serve on the first Louisville Metro Council in November 2002. He was re-elected in November of 2006.Previously he served as Sixth Ward Alderman beginning in January 1992.
He is currently Chairman of Democratic Caucus and Vice Chair of the Committee on Committees. He is also a member of the Budget and the Transportation & Public Works Committee.
Throughout his elected service, Councilman Johnson has made economic development and safety issues focal points of his tenure. He led the City of Louisville in its efforts to build a downtown sports arena, and he led the first efforts that led to legislation creating the merging city and county government. In addition, he wrote and led the Board in passing both a gun lock ordinance and an ordinance prohibiting the sale of weapons to minors. And he authored a noise ordinance to control noise pollution and aid in the quality of life in neighborhoods. He also led the first efforts that led to legislation creating the merging city and county government.
Johnson has also taken the lead in focusing attention on trans fat health issues. He has also fought for better storm debris removal in the recent storm of 2008 and 2009. He has also had 14 miles of sidewalks installed through out the district.
Councilman Johnson created and chaired the Drainage Task Force, overseeing drainage issues throughout the city, and he helped initiate the Basement Backflow Program with MSD. He is also a member of the Police Pension Board, Kenwood Optimists; Iroquois Civic Club; Beechmont Neighborhood Association; Oakdale Neighborhood Association; Pat Greenwell South End Democratic Club; and Beechmont Baptist Church.
Johnson received a bachelor of science degree in Political Science Policy Analysis from the University of Louisville. He is married to Sherry Johnson, and has two sons, Andrew and Tommy.
