In an effort to reach its 2008 goal, several groups and individuals are answering the call for the “Doing Our Part From the Heart Campaign.” As a result, the campaign has extended this year’s drive until April 15th.

“Over the Easter weekend, the response has been great,” says Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D) 24. “When people heard we were down because of the bad weather of February and March, they began to rally.”

The Campaign’s goal of 300 boxes of personal items for the men and women of the United States Military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan fell behind this year after ice and snow effected several drop off points.

“There has also been some concern about rising gas prices,” says Flood. “I know many are hurt by the economy but others are stepping to help us out.”

After Easter, the campaign is a little more than half way to its goal.

“Many people have told us, if you will just give us a little more time to collect, we can achieve this goal,” says Flood.

The Campaign was set to end on March 31st after the kick off on Valentine’s Day.

Flood is working this year’s campaign with the Mohawk District of the Boy Scouts of America, the Okolona Business Association, the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank and Interlink Counseling Service Inc.

Other sponsors of the drive are Mortgage World, Scheller’s Fitness & Cycling, Jefferson Mall Customer Service Center, Lamkin Wealth Management, Allegra Print & Imaging, Citizens Union Bank, BC Roosters and Ong’s Urgent Care.

“I have also been asked if we take items after our deadline of April 15th,” says Flood. “If there are groups that want to collect something for our soldiers, we will help them find a way to get the items to soldiers.”

Last year, the campaign sent 12 boxes of personal items to soldiers at Christmas time from leftover toiletries.

“I want to thank the people who have given so far,” says Flood. “I also want to thank and encourage the groups who are collecting now. I knew Okolona and Metro Louisville would not let us down.
