A total of five Metro Parks community centers will offer extended hours to fill a void when school lets out for the holidays, by providing supervised activities, games and food for young people to have fun in a safe environment.

Councilwomen Barbara Shanklin and Cheri Bryant Hamilton and Councilman Willie Bright are sponsoring the extended hours with appropriations from their respective Neighborhood Development Funds. From 11 a.m. until midnight Dec. 20-23, and from the same times Dec. 27-30, young people ages 13-18 will be able to take part in movie marathons, pool and basketball tournaments, dancing, card and board games, arts and crafts, pizza parties, popcorn and other refreshments.

The centers will be staffed by Metro Parks employees and volunteers, and police will visit the sites several times each day.

The centers that will be open extended hours include:

Presbyterian Community Center, 701 S. Hancock St.

Baxter Community Center, 1125 Cedar Ct.

Portland Community Center, 640 N. 27th St.

Shawnee Community Center, 607 S. 37th St.

Newburg Community Center, 4908 E. Indian Trail
