Louisville Metro Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin, D-2, earned her doctorate of philosophy in education this week from Spalding University, after defending her dissertation, "African American Males and Factors that Lead to Capital Punishment."
Shanklin began work on her doctorate in 1999. After taking time off to run for Metro Council, she worked to complete her course work "to bring closure to my education." Shanklin regularly volunteers at the Cop Shop in Newburg, teaching free computer classes she set up for area residents.
Shanklin, who serves as chairwoman of the Democratic Caucus, also holds a master's degree in training and development, a bachelor's degree in business, and an associate's degree in computer programming.
