Councilman Bob Henderson is encouraging elementary students to Book It when it comes to reading.
"Let's Book It," a reading initiative by Councilman Henderson geared toward Jefferson County Public elementary schools in the 14th District, will run from October until April 2006. The school whose students read the most books during that time will receive a $1,000 grant for its library from the 14th District Neighborhood Development Fund.
Councilman Henderson will announce the reading program Monday during Wilkerson Elementary School's Celebrity Reading Day, in which local "celebrities" read to each class. Participants will include Councilman Henderson, state Rep. Charlie Miller, and members of the Jefferson County Board of Education, among others. The program will begin immediately following the dedication of the new walking path at the school, which begins at 1:30 p.m.
