Two Louisville Metro Council members will join Chenoweth Elementary students, teachers and administrators in a celebration Friday honoring Darleen Horton, the school's science teacher who was this year's Kentucky recipient of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Councilman Ken Fleming, R-7, and Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh, D-9, will present a proclamation to Horton during the ceremony, which will take place at 2:45 p.m. at the school, 3622 Brownsboro Rd.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the nation's highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science. Established by Congress in 1983 and administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation, the annual Presidential Awards program identifies outstanding mathematics and science teachers nationwide and in four U.S. territories for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession.

Recipients receive a $10,000 gift from the National Science Foundation and an all expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC for celebratory events and professional development activities.
