Councilman David Tandy’s announces Fourth District Clean Team Safe Summer Academic and Employment Program

Councilman David Tandy (D) 4, Meyzeek School and the Presbyterian Community Center have coordinated through the Safe Summer Program to form the Fourth District Clean Team: A Safe Summer Academic and Employment Program.
The highly successful project was designed to provide a safe place for healthy, physical and academically enriching activities for children in the Smoketown and Shelby Park Neighborhoods.
The Fourth District Clean Team: Safe Summer Academic and Employment Program (AEP), will consist of three components:
- Career and vocational training
- Neighborhood Clean Team
- Life Skills training
The AEP is for youth ages 12-16 years of age and provides 3 hours of in class training facilitated by PCC and Jewish Family Vocational Service personnel every Monday and Wednesday from 5:00-6:00pm.
This program began July 3rd and will continue until August 31st. Students will benefit from the program by gaining skills that are necessary for career planning and vocational choices. Each youth will work approximately 12 hours per week in different capacities with in the Safe Summer program area. Each student will work in the following capacity:
- 2 hours of class room time- JFVS
- 2 hours of team building activities/ motivational speakers
- 4 hours Fourth District Clean Team
- 4 hours of alternative volunteer opportunities
- PCC
- Meyzeek School
- Community Garden
- Farmer’s Market
- Police Athletic Basketball League
The main focus of this program is the implementation of a Fourth District Neighborhood Clean Team. Youth will assist with trash and debris pick up weekly for approximately 4 hours per week. Youth will focus their energy on the Sheppard Square apartments, PCC and Meyzeek areas. For compensation for volunteering, youth will receive a $50.00 per week stipend.
The total budget for The Clean Team AEP, which will serve approximately 30 teenagers, will be approximately $7,500. This amount includes training and volunteer opportunities.
