In an effort to enhance visibility and service on streets and in neighborhoods, Councilman Tom Owen (D) 8 has purchased a new bicycle for Louisville Metro Police’s Fifth Division.
“For more than 10 years, this Division’s Bike Patrol has been helping our residents and fighting crime,” says Owen. “This purchase is one of maintaining that effort
The TREK mountain bike was purchased for a little over $1000 with the use of District 8 Neighborhood Development Funds. It has been adapted for police work with lighting and accessories for patrolling.
“Bikes such as these help us get into places that are difficult to move around in with a car,” says Sgt. Jamie Schwab of the Fifth Division “Especially in areas such as Cherokee and Seneca Parks. The bike also helps us in smaller alleys and other areas where we can quietly come up on criminal activity.”
The Fifth Division has two full time officers dedicated to the Bike Patrol. There are six officers who also serve the Patrol on a part time basis.
“While fighting crime and keeping us safe are the top priority for LMPD, I am pleased that these officers are also setting an example of the benefits of biking instead of driving said Owen.
After the presentation, Councilman Owen joins officers on patrol of Bardstown Road/
