Several members of the Louisville Metro Council are encouraging residents and shoppers along Dixie Highway to take a few minutes to sign a very important petition.
“Signing your name will signal to national retailers and local officials that Southwest Louisville is economically sound and anxiously awaiting more quality businesses,” says Councilman Rick Blackwell (D-12). “We are partnering with the Southwest Dream Team to make sure that message is loud and clear.”
The help is for an effort called “The Shop Southwest Louisville Campaign” over the next three weeks.
Its focus is to gather 12,000 signatures for local officials to take to the annual Shopping Center Convention in Las Vegas. The Dream Team believes the strong showing of signatures will let national retailers know that Dixie Highway is just as vibrant in sales as any mall anywhere in the country.
The convention is considered by many as the Who’s Who in retail across the Country and around the world.
Joining Blackwell in support of the Dream Team’s effort are Council members Mary Woolridge (D-3), Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13), Bob Henderson (D-14) and Judith Green (D-1).
“The area has the money to spend to support retail business in Shively,” says Woolridge. “If you’re ready to open a business, we are ready to support you.”
“The Shively Center is a good example of how consumers can make a difference,” says Henderson. “After Dillard’s left, Norton Health Care came in. There is a new Bob Evans and there is potential for more growth if we as shoppers let retailers know.”
“This is truly a serious effort to spur growth in our local economy,” says Welch. “Now is the time to let everyone know that Southwest Louisville is serious about the future when it comes to our economic viability.”
Several businesses are coordinating the petition drive, over the next few weeks. The business owners will ask customers to sign. Many Council members are encouraging neighborhood leaders and businesses to get involved.
“The Southwest Dream Team continues to come up with ways to get people involved in our community,” says Green. “This project is just an example of how we can all work together.”
The deadline for the petition drive is Thursday, May 7th
