While most students in Louisville Metro are enjoying the summer, one group has had a special goal to get in better shape. Their efforts will be rewarded this Saturday when the VERB Summer Score Card Grand Finale kicks off in the Jefferson Memorial Forest.
“Now is the time to reward the hard work and dedication by as many as 500 young people who wanted to lead a healthier lifestyle,” says Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13) who is one of the sponsors of the health program.
The VERB Summer Scorecard Grand Finale will be held in the Horine Section of the Forrest beginning at 9:00am. The festivities will last until 12:00pm. Funding for snacks will be provided by Welch and Council members Marianne Butler (D-15 and Dan Johns (D-21)
It is estimated that anywhere from 300 to 500 students in Louisville Metro signed up for the program which began on May 25th. Their goal was to perform weekly exercise. It could be walking, running, riding a bike or swimming. There were many activities that could be accomplished. Participants had to either go to a certain area, like a park or have their parents document their activity at home.
“The great thing about VERB is it can be a family activity that encourages better health,” says Welch. “Now that health care is the current focus of national debate, this program and the students who have participated will show other children that being health is fun and for their benefit in the long run.”
The Grand Finale will feature music and activities in the Forest including climbing the Alpine Tower.
There will also be prizes including Wii, iPod Nano, a Tony Hawk Skateboard, a bicycle, and more! The more activities a student in the program completed the more chances they have to win.
“It is my hope to see this program grow and be available to all children in Louisville Metro,” says Welch
