MLK, Jr. Day of Service in Shelby Park

Olmsted Parks Conservancy invites you to make the day off, a day on!
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service was created to encourage people to come together to improve lives, bridge barriers, and move the nation closer to the “Beloved Community” Dr. King envisioned. Olmsted Parks Conservancy will host a volunteer event in Shelby Park in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 20 11:00am-1:00pm. Projects may include trash pick-up, planting large native trees and mulching. Gloves, tools and refreshments provided. Dress for weather and working outdoors. Jefferson Memorial Forest/ Natural Areas Needs:

Large group- needed to spread mulch around shoreline and fishing spots at Tom Wallace Lake. This will be our second year to mulch these areas in an effort to secure soils and reduce erosion. Heavy work using rakes, hoes, shovels, wheelbarrows, outdoors and on uneven ground. Suitable for adult groups or youth ages 14 and up.
Louisville Loop – We are looking for a group of approximately 10 adults to paint the Portland Canal overlook railing. Painting with brushes and oil-based paints (wear really old clothes). Requires dry weather and 70 degrees or above.
Land Steward Project Days
Anyone interested in improving the landscape and protecting native flora are welcome to participate. On-going volunteers are encouraged, but single-day helpers are always welcome! Gloves, tools, water and on-the-job training are provided. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. You may want to bring a lunch. Project time is scheduled for every Wednesday at 9:00 am
First Saturday of each month at 9:00 am
Meet at the Jefferson Memorial Forest Welcome Center, 11311 Mitchell Hill Road.
Trail Project Days
Anyone interested in improving the trails in JMF/Natural Areas, doing trail patrol and/or reconnaissance are invited to join us during one of the upcoming project days. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. You may want to bring a lunch. Gloves, tools, water and on-the-job training will be provided. Project days are scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon.
Trail Team Project Days
2nd Saturday of each month - meet at the Welcome Center, 11311 Mitchell Hill Road
Waverly Park Project Days (Multi-use/mountain bike trail)
3rd Saturday of each month - meet in the playground parking lot. Waverly Park is located on Arnoldtown Rd. and Clayton Terrace.
Other Park Needs:
Volunteers needed to mulch trees in various parks.
