Louisville Metro Regional Senior Games feature new sports, new location
LOUISVILLE (May 4, 2005) – Louisville-area athletes age 50 and above can showcase their athletic skills in 18 different sports May 17-21 during the Louisville Metro Regional Senior Games. This year, in preparation for Louisville's role as host of the 2007 National Senior Games, six sports have been added, and many of the events are taking place at the University of Louisville's athletic facilities for the first time.
The annual event, organized by Metro Parks, encourages Louisville's seniors to stay physically active, and rewards competitive athletes by sending winners to the Kentucky Senior Games in Lexington, from September 28 to October 1, 2005.
"The Senior Games encourage our community's senior citizens to stay fit and healthy," said Mayor Jerry Abramson. "One of the key components of my Healthy Hometown Movement is promoting lifelong fitness, and the Senior Games reinforce this message by showcasing some of Louisville's most physically fit seniors." Information about the Mayor's Healthy Hometown Movement is available online at www.louisvilleky.gov/healthyhometown.
Early registration continues through May 9, with a $5 fee covering participation in an unlimited number of events. After May 9, registration is $10. Registration forms are available online at www.metro-parks.org; at the Louisville Tennis Center, 3783 Illinois Avenue; or Flaget Community Center, 4425 Greenwood Avenue. Information is available by calling 502/574-2646.
New events in 2005 include racquetball, badminton, volleyball, archery, a triathlon, and a road race. Additionally, the basketball competition is now a three-on-three competition, rather than shooting contests. These changes were made to bring the local competition in line with the events that take place at the National Senior Games.
The University of Louisville made their facilities available for the Senior Games at no charge.
