METRO PARKS TO OFFER SUMMER CAMPS IN 21 LOCATIONS
Registration begins at community centers on April 4

LOUISVILLE (April 1, 2005) – Mayor Jerry Abramson announced today that children ages 6-12 can spend summer vacation in structured Metro Parks day camps that provide safe, fun and educational enrichment opportunities. The camps - offered June 6 to July 29 at 21 Metro Parks community centers and outreach sites - allow children to experience sports, arts and the great outdoors in a wholesome environment.

Registration takes place beginning April 4 on a first-come, first-served basis at the community center of your choice. Registration dates will vary for outreach sites, such as schools and churches; call 502/456-8136 for information on those sites. Full non-refundable payment, by check or money order, is due at registration, along with a one-time registration and T-shirt fee of $15. Camp fees range from $15 to $75 weekly, depending on the activities offered at each site.

"Our high-quality, affordable camps are a terrific choice for parents who are seeking structured activities for their children during the summer school break," said Abramson. "Each summer, the Metro Parks camp program provides enriching activities and positive influences for children in our hometown. Brightside will also be providing its educational programming to help our young people learn about becoming good environmental stewards."

Camps begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. An early bird program, allowing drop-off between 7 and 8:30 a.m., is available for an extra $4 per day at some locations. Camps will not be in session on July 4 or 5. Partial tuition waivers are available to those who can demonstrate financial need. Additionally, discounts are available for multiple camp participants from the same family. Residents from outside Louisville Metro can attend Metro Parks camps for an additional $10 per child each week.

Metro Parks is hiring seasonal help for summer camp and swimming pool programs. Information is available by calling 456-8152. Additionally, those ages 13 and 14 -- who are too old for most camp programs but too young for summer camp employment -- can attend some camp locations as junior camp counselors. Contact the camp location of your choice for more information. Another option for older children this summer is Beechmont Community Center, which will host daily activities specifically for teens ages 13-17.

To register for a Metro Parks summer camp program, please contact the camp site of your choice. Summer Camp information is available by calling 502/456-8186 or visiting www.metro-parks.org.
