Community Centers Offer Adapted Hours, Extended Programming During School’s Winter Break

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Teenagers can become restless -- and even a little bored -- while home from school on winter break. So, for the third consecutive year, Mayor Jerry Abramson has adapted the hours selected Metro Parks community centers will be open during the holiday season to allow students the opportunity to engage in enjoyable, safe activities away from the home.

Abramson is keeping six community centers open until 9 p.m. on certain weeknights during winter break to offer free sports programs, movies, art classes, video games, and more, he announced today. The community centers, and the variety of activities offered in each, can offer a perfect antidote to combat holiday boredom among teenagers, Abramson said.

“Allowing these community centers to remain open for extended hours is an investment in the health and safety of our children,” Abramson said. “Over the past three years, this initiative has proven successful at keeping kids engaged in positive activities while school is out of session.”

Metro Parks first revised the schedules of targeted community centers beginning in 2005, after a pilot program in 2004 showed that teenagers desired more access to community centers while they were home for the holidays. Last year, thousands of teenagers participated in evening activities at local community centers during the school break.

Community centers will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 25, and Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 to commemorate the holidays. A complete list of Louisville’s community centers, hours, locations, and scheduled activities is available by visiting Typically, the centers remain open until 7 p.m. during the week.
