GE Volunteers Improve Portland Community Center

Friday April 20, 2007

Portland Volunteer Project April 2007Nearly 100 GE Consumer & Industrial employees from the company's Information Technology department spent the day volunteering at Portland Community Center today.  The GE volunteers painted surfaces and cleaned floors throughout the facility, installed new countertops and refurbished cabinets in the kitchen, built shelves in two rooms, replaced downspouts and installed gutter guards to prevent leaves and debris from clogging gutters.  Additionally, they installed several new GE appliances in the kitchen, including two stoves, two microwaves, a refrigerator and a stand-up freezer.

"We're so grateful for the wonderful work the GE volunteers have done today," said Mike Heitz, director of Metro Parks.  "Our community center looks like it has been totally transformed.  The kids, adults and seniors from surrounding neighborhoods who come here for recreation will find the building more functional and more inviting as a result of these efforts."

Portland Volunteer Project April 2007This was the second time this year that volunteers have worked on projects at this community center.  On January 15, another volunteer group replaced flooring and blinds in the building's teen room and painted areas of the building.

Portland Community Center, 640 North 27th Street, is one of 17 community centers operated by Metro Parks.  These community centers offer a variety of services, including recreational activities, sports leagues, art classes, homework assistance, GED classes, summer camps and meeting space for neighborhood groups.
