Major Improvements Made at Two Community Centers for Martin Luther King Season of Service

Wednesday January 17, 2007

The walls at Portland Community Center get a fresh coat of paintApproximately 420 volunteers from Target, Home Depot, and the Office for Youth Development completed nearly $30,000 worth of improvements at two community centers, as part of the Martin Luther King Season of Service.

Volunteers worked at Baxter Community Center to paint interior ceilings and walls throughout much of the three-story facility.  Metro Councilman David Tandy (D-12) provided $2,000 in funding for painting tools and supplies, as well as lunch for the volunteers.  Additional supplies were provided by Target, Sherwin-Williams, and the Louisville Metro Housing Authority, which owns the building.

At Portland Community Center, 50 volunteers from Home Depot replaced the floors in the teen room and kitchen with new tile; the walls were also repainted.  Home Depot donated all the materials for this project.  Metro Parks and Office for Youth Development provided lunch for the Home Depot volunteers. Youth from the Office for Youth Development programs assisted with serving lunch to the Home Depot volunteers.

Both projects were visited by Councilman Tandy, Congressman John Yarmuth, and State Sen. Gerald Neal to celebrate the accomplishments of both the volunteers and Dr. Martin Luther King.

The project was coordinated with two local volunteer service organizations, Service for Peace and Hands On Louisville.  These projects were part of the kick-off for the Martin Luther King Season of Service which runs from January 15, 2007 through April 4, 2007.  For more information about registration for additional projects celebrating the Martin Luther King Season of Service, visit www.handsonlouisville.org.
