Metro Parks Newsroom

Metro Parks opens 10 summer swimming pools

Thursday May 24, 2007

Outdoor pools will remain open until August

Just in time for Memorial Day, Metro Parks will open three outdoor swimming pools on Saturday, May 26.  Seven more pools open the following weekend.  These summer pools remain open until August.

On Saturday, three pools – at Sun Valley Park, Breslin Park and Watterson Elementary School – will open for the season.  Sun Valley Park’s swimming pool is opening a week earlier than usual, while a major leak is repaired at the nearby Fairdale Pool in Nelson Hornbeck Park.  Traditionally, the Fairdale Pool opens on Memorial Day weekend.

Standard pool hours are: Monday to Friday, noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 to 6 p.m.; Sunday, 1 to 6 p.m.  Additionally, Breslin Park’s pool will be open for lap swimming on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. for a $2 fee.  Fairdale Pool will have extended hours, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  All outdoor pools close one day a week for maintenance.

Admission is $1.50 for children 17 and under, and $2 for adults 18 and over.  Photo identification is required for anyone age 9 or older; children 8 or under must be accompanied by a guardian with photo identification.  Organized groups can call Metro Parks at (502) 897-9949 for information about group reservation rates.  Pool patrons may bring their own picnic supplies, although large coolers, glass containers and alcoholic beverages are not permitted.  Metro Parks reserves the right to inspect small coolers.  To provide a healthy swimming environment, all pools are smoke-free.

Wyandotte Park’s pool, which needs significant repair, will be closed this year while Metro Parks develops a master plan to upgrade the entire park.  Pool users may visit a nearby pool at Hazelwood Elementary School a few blocks away, along with Norton Pool in Camp Taylor Park and the pool at Western High School.

“We’re committed to operating our pools in a way that’s fun and safe for our customers,” said Mike Heitz, director of Metro Parks.  “Clearly, many of our summer pools are reaching the end of their expected life span, and we’ll have to make some hard decisions about summer pool operations in future years, especially given the continued drop in outdoor pool attendance.  Thanks to the hard work of our pool staff, we were able to get these pools repaired and ready for use this summer.  After the pool season ends, we’re going to begin a discussion about how to best meet the aquatic needs of our community.”  The newest outdoor pools in the Metro Parks system are more than 30 years old, and some are twice that age.  Over the past 15 years, use of these summer pools has dropped by 53 percent.
