Main Pool at Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center to re-open Monday
Friday April 11, 2008
After more than a month of extensive repairs, the main pool at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center is scheduled to re-open at 5 a.m. on Monday, April 14. The aquatic center has operated with only the therapy pool and fitness center open since the Olympic pool’s main drain system failed on February 25.
“Our customers have been incredibly patient and understanding while this major work took place, and we’re very excited to be welcoming them back on Monday,” said Mike Heitz, director of Metro Parks. Officials worked with other local pools to arrange alternate swim accommodations while the Olympic pool was closed, and membership periods were extended to compensate customers for their inconvenience.
The first 500 visitors on Monday will receive a free tote bag with the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center logo, courtesy of Metro Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh (D-9). Metro Parks will also offer refreshments and door prizes on Monday.
After the main drain system failed, workers had to cut through a thicker-than-expected concrete pool lining and large segments of bedrock below the pool floor to conduct repairs. During that time, Metro Parks also completed a major pool improvement project originally scheduled to take place later this spring. That work included replacing aging pipes and installing a new filtration system that will greatly reduce the need to apply chemicals to the water. Together, the planned pool improvement project and main drain replacement cost approximately $450,000; this brings the pool into compliance with health and safety codes.
