Three free concerts to take place at Shelby Park
Friday April 11, 2008
Three two-hour concerts will be performed in the recently renovated Shelby Park this spring and fall thanks to a sponsorship by Chase and a partnership between the Louisville Orchestra and Metro Parks.
The Concerts in Shelby Park series will kick off with a show at the park on Saturday, April 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. On that date, a jazz/swing combo from the Orchestra will perform at the park bandstand, which is the site for all three concerts. Families are encouraged to picnic while they enjoy the concerts, and children’s art activities will take place before each show. The performances are free and open to the public.
Special thanks go to the Shelby Park Neighborhood Association for their assistance in planning the concerts.
“Shelby Park is a wonderful venue for outdoor concerts,” said Mike Heitz, director of Metro Parks. “It’s a great opportunity for residents to see what’s new at the park and to enjoy world-class music from the Louisville Orchestra.” In recent years, Shelby Park has undergone approximately $1 million in improvements by Metro Parks and the Olmsted Parks Conservancy, including new exercise paths, a new bandstand, improved tennis and basketball courts and new trees.
The second show will occur on Friday, May 9, from 6:30-8:30 p.m, as a brass quintet performs at the bandstand as part of a Mother’s Day celebration at the park. The third and final performance will take place on Sunday, September 7, from 3-5 p.m., when a jazz/swing combo plays at Shelby Park.
