Public meetings on Charlie Vettiner Park, Mahoney Property master plans March 5

Wednesday February 25, 2009

LOUISVILLE -- Metro Parks will host two public meetings on Thursday, March 5, to discuss future plans for Charlie Vettiner Park and the 95-acre Mahoney Property, which was purchased by Metro Parks in 2007. The meetings will take place at Farmer Elementary School, 6405 Gelhaus Lane, just north of the Gene Snyder/Billtown Road interchange.

The meetings will be the first in a series to develop master plans for both sites. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., discussion will center on the Vettiner Park master plan, with the Mahoney Property plan to follow at 7:15 p.m.. Typically, the initial meeting within the master plan process is designed to be a “listening session.” Residents are encouraged to share their concerns, likes and dislikes about the parks with the project team, as well as ideas for improvements or changes in park use or facilities.

The master plan for the Mahoney Property will not include the MVP Zone community center for people with disabilities that had been proposed for that location in 2007. That project was recently halted because of economic conditions, and the private foundation backing the MVP Zone is working with Louisville Metro Government officials to find other ways to serve citizens with disabilities.

In addition, Metro Parks is seeking photos, old newspaper clippings or any other additional historical items residents may have relating to both properties. Residents are encouraged to bring these items to the March 5 meeting to share.

Citizens who can’t attend the meeting will be able take part in the planning process by visiting the Metro Parks web site, where they can offer online feedback, sign up for an e-mail notification list for announcements of future meetings, and see conceptual plans as they are developed in the coming months. About the parks:

Charlie Vettiner Park is a 283-acre park located on Mary Dell Lane off Billtown Road in southern Louisville Metro and includes an 18-hole golf course, hiking trails, a fishing lake, dog run, disc golf and more. Metro Parks purchased the estate of Mae Mahoney, whose family called the property Twin Meadows, in December 2007. The property has yet to be developed but Metro Parks is looking to develop it for multi-use recreational purposes. The property is located near Bardstown Road off the Gene Snyder Freeway.
