Annual 50 and Over Games to Feature Best in Senior Competition

Tuesday May 4, 2010

Mayor Jerry Abramson is encouraging citizens age 50 and older to take part in Louisville’s Fifty and Over Games from May 15-23. This annual Metro Parks event for athletes from Louisville and surrounding counties includes 17 events for participants of all skills and abilities, from racquetball to basketball, golf, tennis and cycling.

“As the participants in the 50 and Over Games prove each year, you’re never too old to experience the thrill of competition,” Abramson said. “We’re encouraging anyone who feels up to the challenge -- and wants to have a little fun -- to participate.”

The Fifty and Over Games, now in its fourteenth year, encourages citizens to pursue lifelong fitness, which is one of the key goals of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement. The deadline for entry into the events is Saturday, May 15. A one-time, $20 entry fee allows participants to compete in an unlimited number of events.

Registration forms are available online here. They can also be picked up at the Louisville Tennis Center (3783 Illinois Avenue in Joe Creason Park), along with 16 community centers operated by Metro Parks. Information is also available by phone at 502/574-2646.

Most events will take place at the University of Louisville’s athletic facilities, with remaining events scheduled for area parks and other facilities. Rules and regulations for each competition are available online. To help participants get ready for the Fifty and Over Games, Metro Parks offers a variety of fitness programs, including exercise classes, weight rooms, walking clubs, golf lessons and more.

In addition to the competition, athletes will be able to take part in the annual awards banquet, held at Masterson’s Restaurant at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. Medalists may attend for free, and the charge for non-participants and non-medalists is $10. Sponsors of the Fifty and Over Games include:

· KIPDA – the Designated Area Agency on Aging

· AMF Derby City Bowling

· University of Louisville

· The Billiards Club of Louisville
