10 Donation Drop-Off, Volunteer Sites Set Up for 'Day of Service'

Friday January 7, 2011

Those who have resolved to give back to the community by volunteering or to clean out their closets and donate unused items to a local charity for the new year are encouraged to join Mayor Greg Fischer’s “Day of Service” this Saturday, January 8.

“We are hoping that people want to lend a hand and help improve, and beautify, the city of Louisville,” Fischer, who took office earlier this week, said. “But for those who won’t be able to, we’ve set up 10 locations where residents can drop off donated items. These items can be canned goods, shoes, coats, pet items and books. Local charities – and local families – will benefit by everyone’s generosity on Saturday.”

As part of the city's “Day of Service,” there are 10 locations where people can drop off donated items between 9 a.m. and noon. A number of local agencies will benefit from this drive: sixteen local non-profits and EDGE (Ecumenical Dynamic Growth Experience). EDGE will accept shoes in any condition as part of their “One Million Shoe Drive” to benefit those in areas of need, such as Haiti. Community Ministries of Louisville will collect and give the donated items to people in need.

Registration for group projects for the Day of Service is closed. However, Brightside will be hosting clean-up projects at all 10 drop-off locations. Those interested in volunteering to beautify and improve those sites will be furnished with supplies, and simply need to show up at one of the locations at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

For more information, contact Metro Parks at 502/456-8100 or visit the Metro United Way Web site. Items that won’t be accepted at the drop-off locations include electronics, appliances, magazines and perishable food items.
