Canoe Adventures for Youth and Families: Rides Launch From Two Metro Parks

Thursday October 4, 2012

Explore the great outdoors by canoeing the Ohio River! Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures (UWCA), in partnership with Metro Parks’ Jefferson Memorial Forest, aims to introduce youth and families to the beauty of the Ohio by offering free rides in Voyageur canoes. Rides will leave from Shawnee Park on October 5 and Riverview Park on October 6.

The UWCA program started with the goal of serving urban youth in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota area – linking learning standards to environmental education and stewardship, and promoting physical activity in the outdoors. Due to its success, organizers have taken it on the road in a program called “The Canoemobile”. In addition to Louisville, this program will make stops in other cities that border a major river.

The canoe trips are FREE to groups and individuals (ages 3 and older), but pre-registration is required by calling Jefferson Memorial Forest at 502-368-5404. The Voyageur canoes are safe, stable and can carry as many as 15 people per ride. Safety equipment and trained staff will be provided. Organizers suggest wearing comfortable outdoor clothing that can get wet, but no flip-flops please! Water coolers will be available, so bring a refillable water bottle.

(At the Riverview Park event only – in addition to the free Voyageur rides – canoes and kayaks will be available for rental at $15/each – contact event partner River City Canoe & Kayak to reserve – 502-384-3737, or

The rides are sponsored by Metro Council District 12 Councilman Rick Blackwell and District 5 Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton, with support from River City Canoe & Kayak.
