Iroquois Amphitheater Presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore

Wednesday July 25, 2012

A highlight of the 2012 season is the “Iroquois Amphitheater Presents” production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s well-known and well-loved comedic operetta H.M.S. Pinafore., runs August 17 – 25. A nautical comedy set to some of the duo’s most witty and memorable lyrics and melodies, it includes a tale of love across class boundaries, of rousing patriotism, and of how to employ the unqualified!

“Iroquois Amphitheater Presents” is a new series launched this season by the amphitheater, offering high-quality local productions and talent, and this show is no exception. A company of over a dozen of Louisville’s finest performers will gleefully highlight the topsy-turvy operetta, beloved by Gilbert & Sullivan fans for its score and comedy alike. H.M.S. Pinafore will be directed by the co-founder of Le Petomane Theatre Ensemble, Gregory Maupin. Local favorites Scott Anthony will act as Music Director and Robert McFarland will choreograph.

“Bringing back a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta that was a favorite in the amphitheater’s heyday is a great way to round out this season, and launch preparations for next year, when we will celebrate our 75th season under the stars!,” said amphitheater manager, Mike Slaton. “Greg Maupin has put together a fantastic cast and crew and this show will be a wonderful way for a whole new generation to fall in love with outdoor theatre.”

The production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore is the only performance of this type for the 2012 season. Iroquois Amphitheater hopes for the opportunity to put on similar full-scale productions in the upcoming seasons. This musical will be a great opportunity for neighbors of Iroquois Park, as well as family and friends from surrounding areas to come together as a community.

“Louisville Metro Parks is very proud to oversee the management of this theater, which has been a community treasure and source of pride since its construction in the late 1930’s,” said Parks Director Mike Heitz. “A major renovation in 2003 resulted in a state-of-the-art facility, enhancing the space for performers and audience alike.”
