Metro Parks Announces Five Sites for Public Sledding This Winter
For thousands of local children – and quite a few adults too – sledding is a highlight of the winter season. Metro Parks and Recreation wants to remind the public it will open hills in five parks for sledding from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on days when snow accumulation reaches 2-3 inches.

“Jack O’Lantern Spectacular” at Iroquois Park Offers “$10 after 10pm” Discount Ticket Special!
Discount tickets are available for the “Jack O’Lantern Spectacular” event underway through November 2 at Iroquois Park. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, after 10 p.m., adult tickets will be reduced to $10 – a two dollar discount off the regular price.

Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Hike and Outdoor Adventure at Jefferson Memorial Forest
Families can enjoy the fall colors in Jefferson Memorial Forest at the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Hike and Outdoor Adventure Sat., Oct. 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can get a pumpkin, take a hay ride, and hike trails of various lengths through the Forest at the height of fall color. The ninth annual hike is part of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement, encouraging better health and wellness by highlighting opportunities for increased physical activity.

Louisville Extreme Park Partial Redesign Public Meeting October 29
Louisville Metro Parks will hold a public meeting to share the final concept design for the planned partial relocation of the Louisville Extreme Park. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on October 29, at the offices of Luckett & Farley, the design firm for this project, located at 737 South Third Street.

Free Equestrian Program for Youth Coming to South Louisville Community Center
A partnership between Louisville Metro Parks & Recreation, Equestrian Resources, and the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) will bring free youth equestrian programs to the South Louisville Community Center, 2911 Taylor Boulevard. KEEP’s “All About Horses” is open to youth ages 9 to 15. The program begins in November and runs through May.

The glow from thousands of artistically-carved, illuminated pumpkins will light up a wooded walking trail in Iroquois Park when the huge, new Jack O’Lantern Spectacular event arrives Oct. 10, Mayor Greg Fischer announced today.

Free Canoe Rides for Youth and Families October 4 & 5
Metro Parks’ Natural Areas Division, local partner Get Outdoors Kentucky, and Wilderness Inquiry’s Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures (UWCA) aim to introduce youth and families to the beauty of the Ohio River by offering free rides in Voyageur canoes. Rides will leave from Shawnee Park on October 4 and Riverview Park on October 5.

Mayor Fischer, Metro Council Members Celebrate Major Improvements at Charlie Vettiner Park
City officials joined neighbors today to celebrate more than $760,000 in renovations and improvements at Charlie Vettiner Park in eastern Louisville. The additions include a new walkway, new parking spaces, speed humps, and drainage improvements—all identified by park users as high priority needs. The construction focused on the first phase of work outlined in the park’s master plan.

The annual Great American Campout happens Saturday, June 22, 7:00 p.m. to Sunday, June 23, 11:00 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Forest. LG&E Construction at Cane Run Affects Southwestern Segment of Louisville Loop
As construction progresses on LG&E’s new 640-megawatt natural gas combined cycle unit at 5252 Cane Run Road, a two-mile section of the Louisville Loop will undergo periodic closures, as a public safety precaution. Intermittent closures are expected through early May.

SilverSneakers Senior Fitness Program Expands to Seventh Metro Parks and Recreation Location
Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation is expanding its partnership with the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program by adding a seventh location where the nationally-recognized program will be offered. Charlie Vettiner Park Master Plan–Phase One Construction to Start By February 1
