Major Barry Wilkerson is currently assigned as the Commander of the Eighth Division.
Wilkerson started his law enforcement career in 1989 with the Jefferson County Police Department (JCPD) and was assigned to the former Charlie District as a patrol officer and transferred to the former Southfields Training Academy as an instructor. He was promoted to sergeant in 1997 and went back to patrol in the former Charlie District. In January 1999, he was tasked with the creation of the former Volunteer Services Unit.
After being promoted to lieutenant in December 1999, Wilkerson commanded the former Fleet Services Unit, the former Basic Recruit Academy, the former Recruitment and Hiring Unit and the former Field Training Program at the Southfields Training Academy and was an assistant commander in the former Charlie District. He also commanded the former Economic Crimes and Technical Support Unit and most recently, the Homicide Unit.
Beginning in 1992, Wilkerson served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team for 15 years and commanded the team for six (6) years.
Major Wilkerson is a graduate of the University of Louisville and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Police Administration. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers Course and the FBI National Academy.
Major Wilkerson is married with three (3) children and one (1) grandson with a granddaughter on the way.
