Major Gregory C. Burns Jr. is currently assigned as the Commander of the Sixth Division.
Major Burns began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). He served in the former First, Second, Fourth and Sixth Districts. He also commanded the Mounted Patrol Unit. Since merger, Burns has served in the First and Second Divisions.
During his law enforcement career, Burns has received three (3) Meritorious Unit Citations, two (2) Life Saving Awards, the Commendable Valor Award, the Exceptional Valor Award, the Purple Heart Award and LMPD’s highest award given, the Medal of Honor.
Burns is a four (4) year veteran of the United States Air Force. He served from April 1989 until April 1993, achieving the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged. During his tenure in the Air Force, Burns served in Operation Desert Storm and received numerous commendations, including being named the Pacific Air Forces Outstanding Performer.
Major Burns holds a degree in Applied Science in Criminal Justice and has attended the Community College of the Air Force, Jefferson Community and Technical College, Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville. Burns is a graduate of The Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course and was named a dean’s scholar.
