Major James T. Smith

Major J T Smith

Major Smith is a 24 year law enforcement veteran. He started his law enforcement career with the Kentucky State Police as a trooper at the Morehead and LaGrange posts. With the Jefferson County Police Department, he served in the Baker, Charlie and David Districts. He has also worked in Traffic, Narcotics/Vice, CACU, Internal Affairs and SWATT. As a member of LMPD, Smith has served in the Charlie District, Inspectional Services and as commander of the Sixth Division. He is currently the commander of the Fifth Division.

Major Smith is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a BS in Police Administration and a minor in Military Science. He has also studied at the Southern Police Institute - Administrative Officers Course and Harvard University's Senior Management Institute for Police. He has participated on many community boards and committees, two of which are Seven Counties Services and SIDS Network of Kentucky.

Major Smith is a member of the United States Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel. In December 2005, he returned to the police department after serving a 14 month deployment that included serving as Commander of the 343rd Military Police Detachment in Baghdad, Iraq. For his service while deployed in Iraq, Major Smith was awarded the Bronze Star, Global War on Terrorism, Iraqi Freedom Medal and Combat Action Badge.
