The VIPS program has been a huge success and is growing daily. Currently, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) maintains approximately 75 civilian volunteers including 14 volunteer chaplains. There are also approximately 60 volunteer members with LMPD's Explorer Post. All of these volunteers have assisted the department throughout the year at numerous community events and festivals. The most noted events include Thunder Over Louisville, the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. The department's Kentucky State Fair display, the largest event with volunteer help, is staffed from morning until night with approximately 2 - 3 volunteers at any given time.

In 2004, the volunteer program contributed 13,755 hours of assistance to the LMPD with a total savings of $255,257.11.
