Dormitory and Campus Burglary Prevention Tips

  • Lock all outside doors and windows when leaving the dorm and when going to bed at night.
  • Trim all bushes and trees around campus windows to prevent hiding places for intruders.
  • Install solid, sturdy doors with deadbolts on the exterior of the dorm entrances and exits and install quality locks on dorm windows.
  • Use motion sensor lights on the exterior of dorms or dusk to dawn lights.
  • Change locks and re-key locks at the beginning of every new school year.
  • Lock bicycles when left outside of the dorm.
  • Never hide keys under doormats, flower pots, etc. Burlgars know where to look for hidden keys.
  • Watch out for suspicious people or vehicles around the campus and dorms.
  • Engrave all valuables with your driver's license or personal ID number that student's keep in their dorm room.
  • Video record or photograph the contents of the dorm room with serial and identification numbers. This also helps in the event of a fire. The insurance company may recommend that the value, purchase date, serial number, etc. of items in the dorm room be noted to identify property.

  • Lock vehicles and close the windows when not in the vehicle.
  • Never leave keys in the vehicle when away from it.
  • Do not leave a vehicle running while unattended.
  • Do not keep valuables in the vehicle.
  • Keep packages, store purchases, etc. in the trunk or out of view while transporting.
  • Park in a well lit area.
  • Do not leave your garage door opener in view in the vehicle. Place it in the glove box or out of sight.
  • Remove CD player covers or stereo mounts and place in the trunk when the vehicle is unattended.
  • Do not leave driver's license or registration in the vehicle.

Campus Burglary Prevention Tips

  • Use night lights or leave a light on at night.
  • Remove money from the cash registers and leave the drawers open while empty in any areas with cash registers.
  • Secure money in a safe area.
  • Use motion sensor lights on the exterior of the building or dusk to dawn lights.
  • Keep current inventory records of all contents of the building.
  • Engrave serial numbers on all valuables and electronics.
  • Install steel doors or solid core doors and use deadbolt locks.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are locked and secure.
  • Keep the exterior of the building free of hiding places such as bushes, dumpsters, etc.
  • Install security bars on back doors.
  • Install a security alarm system and maintain it.
