LMPD Horse Patrol Takes High Honors in Major Competition
(November 24, 2003) -- The award-winning Louisville Metro Police Department Mounted Patrol is a big winner again!
On October 11th and 12th, the LMPD Mounted Patrol competed in the 20th Annual Police Equestrian Competition at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Eighty-nine police officers from 31 departments participated. LMPD came in 2nd place for the grand prize which was for a 4-year old horse in its initial training as a police mount, valued at $10,000. The Toronto Canada Police Department took first place by 16 points. The final score was a close 502-486.
Other LMPD Mounted Patrol honors were: 2nd Place in the Uniform Competition (Officer Bill Mattingly), 3rd Place in the Individual Combined - Equitation and Obstacle (Sergeant Alan Bybee), 3rd Place in the Departmental Obstacle Course competition (Sergeant Alan Bybee, Officer Patty Gravatte and Officer Bill White), 4th Place in the Team Tandem Obstacle Course (Sergeant Alan Bybee and Officer Donna Kidd), 4th Place in the Equitation competition (Officer Donna Kidd), 5th Place in the Individual combined - Equitation and Obstacle (Officer Donna Kidd), 7th Place in Ribbon Equitation competition (Officer Bill White), and 8th Place in the Individual Obstacle Course (Sergeant Alan Bybee).
Because of its skill and expertise, LMPD as a team won more trophies and ribbons than any other agency. This with younger horses and less experienced mounted officers.
