  2008 Eligibility Criteria and Requirements:

The Good Neighbor Award recognizes the ongoing efforts of Louisville citizens who are making exceptional contributions to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. The Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award seeks to identify and honor people in our city who are outstanding examples of neighbors helping neighbors. This program strives to recognize those special citizens who make a difference in our community without seeking or receiving recognition for their service – the unsung heroes. The Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award is a way of thanking those citizens who are committed to preserving, maintaining and improving the quality of life in their neighborhoods and our community.

Each nominee must meet the following requirements:

  • Contributes to the neighborhood beyond their own citizen responsibilities. For example, someone who not only volunteers in assisting seniors in the neighborhood, by taking out their trash, driving them to the doctor, or starting a phone bank, etc…, but may be a youth mentor participating in a reading and/or other programs in the neighborhood.
  • Shows concern for their neighborhood’s well-being and the overall quality of life for Louisville Metro. For example, takes care of not only their own property, but helps to keep the entire neighborhood clean. Someone who carries out and returns garbage carts and recycling bins for neighbors, expecting no recognition for their good deeds.
  • Overcomes obstacles or takes risks in the pursuit of creating, developing, and furthering strong neighborhoods. For instance, someone overcoming personal challenges, while striving to help others. They may coordinate and plan picnics, festivals, and events in the community. They provide compassionate and competent guidance to the neighborhood through promoting volunteerism.
  • Encourages neighbors to participate in activities for the benefit of all. Perhaps starting a neighborhood association or neighborhood watch in their area. This person might accept a leadership role in contributing to the improvement of their community.
  • Demonstrates results. For example, someone who works with the schools, their local law enforcement and business associations as well as other organizations in an effort to strengthen their community and empower the residents of that neighborhood. The nominee not only initiates contact with these organizations, but ensures that results are achieved.
  • Models the true spirit of citizenship. This nominee displays exceptional acts of good citizenship through their unconditional kindness, dedication and commitment to their neighbors and the community in which they live.

The Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award winners will be honored on Sunday, September 21, 2008

Disclaimer: Louisville Metro Employees, sub-contractors, or previous winners are ineligible for nomination.
