Marie Clay, District 1, Parkland
Marie Clay has lived in Metro Louisville for 56 years and in her current neighborhood for 34. She graduated from Spalding University and is a retired registered nurse, having worked 44 years in various hospitals and extended care facilities. She has three children and four grandchildren. In the next five years she would like to see the community organized so citizens would be aware of all issues regarding city government.
Nomination: What stood out to the committee was the variety of volunteer aide Marie provides to her neighborhood. She helps senior citizens by taking out their trash, driving them to the doctor and starting a phone bank. She is also a youth mentor, assisting with a reading program in the neighborhood.
Yolanda Edwards, District 2, Fegenbush Lane
Yolanda Edwards has lived in Metro Louisville for 54 years and in her current neighborhood for 25. She has worked as a nurse's aide and has been an operating room sterilization tech. She has operated an in-home daycare business for the past 14 years, doing what she loves – working with children. In the next 5 years she would like to see her neighborhood have a resource center to accommodate the needs of children and see a decrease in criminal activity.
Nomination: Yolanda shows concern for her neighborhood and the quality of life by helping lead youth in the right direction and looking after the well being of neighborhood children. She encourages neighbors' participation in activities and checks on elderly citizens.
Jerry Marshall Sr., District 3, Hallmark
Jerry Marshall Sr. has lived in Louisville for 30 years and in his current neighborhood for 25. He has four children and seven grandchildren and retired from Philip Morris USA after 31 years. He feels that trying to get back the family structure will cut down on crime.
Nomination: Jerry was selected for his volunteer efforts delivering meals to seniors and being an active member of the Cypress Street Block Watch and the Louisville Metro Police Department's Second District Community Policing Advisory Board. He also works with rundown neighborhood properties.
Martha Cull, District 4, Main Street Association
Martha Cull has lived in Louisville for 39 years and her neighborhood for the last two. She and her husband recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary and have five children and six grandchildren. She has worked for the Main STreet Visitor's Center since 1979 where she enjoys greeting visitors to our city and sharing the distinctive history and architecture of Metro Louisville. In the next 5 years she would like to see progress in community revitalization in downtown Louisville, along with building downtown amenities for everyone to enjoy.
Nomination: Martha is an active neighborhood advocate and leader of historic preservation and revitalization along Main Street. She is a "Good Neighbor" and a "Great Greeter." When she is not helping people at the Main Street Visitors Center, you might find her greeting visiting riverboats such as the Delta Queen and welcoming passengers who disembark at the wharf.
William Wright, District 5, Portland
William Wright has lived in Metro Louisville and his neighborhood since 1958 and is retired from the food service industry. In the next 5 years he would like to see his neighborhood continue to grow and maintain its successes.
Nomination: William takes care of his own property and assists his neighbors in keeping his entire neighborhood clean by picking up debris on his street. He watches after a widow on his street and helps with animals in the area. He helps with garbage and recycling bins for many of his neighbors and watches a neighbor's house when they are gone. He expects no recognition for the things he does because he just wants everyone to have a nice place to live.
Helga Ulrich, District 6, Old Louisville
Helga Ulrich has lived in Louisville and the Old Louisville neighborhood for three years. Born in Berlin Germany, she immigrated to the United States in 1971. She is a retired research and development technical manager and has been a volunteer with the Louisville Metro Police Department's Fourth Division. In the next five years she would like to see more restoration of historic buildings in Old Louisville and more single family homes. She hopes for more participation by neighborhood organizations and would like to showcase the uniqueness of her neighborhood.
Nomination: Helga is a woman determined to improve her community. She helped start a program where she makes follow-up calls on crimes, thus freeing detectives to investigate more serious crimes. She volunteers 30-40 hours per week on this activity. She also worked with neighborhood associations in her area to start a "Crime and Safety Committee." Through all this, she still finds time to help with the Holiday House Tour, the St. James Art Fair and has offered her garden for the Garden Tour of Old Louisville.
Martha M. Davis, District 7, Windy Hills
Martha M. Davis has lived in Louisville since 1962 and in Windy Hills since 1984. She has three children. For many years she worked downtown and loved the pace. She is "retired" but remains active in her neighborhood and District 7. She is concerned about the environment – both the physical and aesthetic and participates on the district Sign Squad and the semi-annual district cleanup. Several times a week she picks up trash along her three-mile walking route through Windy Hills.
Nomination: Martha is an active neighborhood advocate and leader in Windy Hills. She was also the 2005 Windy Hills Good Neighbor. She has a passion for keeping her community clean and often picks up trash in her neighborhood. She is a volunteer with the District 7 Clean Team and Sign Squad. She has been instrumental in organizing parades and festivals and making efforts to celebrate patriotism and a sense of community in her area.
Joanne Tingley, District 8, Belknap
Joanne Tingley has lived in Metro Louisville since 1948 and in the Belknap neighborhood for 50 years. She has four children and four grandchildren and has been a homemaker for over 50 years. In the next five years she would like to see her neighborhood maintain the same ambiance as it currently has to showcase its great historic value.
Nomination: Joanne was nominated for her work to lead her neighborhood association through a bylaws review during a very difficult time for the group. She formed a committee, kept everyone focused and on task, and the new bylaws are a strong and positive backbone of the association. She also sends welcome cards to all new members, individuals and businesses, welcoming them to the neighborhood and thereby ensuring the existence and viability of the organization. Her voice is one of reason, thoughtfulness and respect.
James Newton Burrice, District 9, Zorn Avenue
James Newton Burrice has lived in Louisville's east end all his life. Despite cerebral palsy, he keeps busy "24/7." The most important and rewarding aspect of his work is writing letters of inspiration, encouragement and support to his friends who are ill or going through difficult times. He has been an active member of Beargrass Christian Church for 40 years and is currently president of the Greenleaves Homeowners Association.
Nomination: James received countless votes of appreciation and accomplishment for work he has conducted in District 9. He says that his greatest pleasure is helping others and being a blessing to his community, despite battling cerebral palsy. Although he lives a challenging life, he strives to help others. He is a past recipient of a WLKY "Bell" award. He has coordinated and planned picnics, festivals and events in the community and provides leadership and guidance to the neighborhood through volunteer associations.
Liz Dumbaugh Martin, District 10, Belmar
Liz Dumbaugh Martin is a native of Louisville, she has lived in the Belmar neighborhood for more than five years. She and her husband have two children. She has worked at the University of Louisville School of Social Work for 6 ½ years as a liaison between U of L and the State Cabinet for Health and Family Services. In the next five years she hopes to raise awareness and continued respect by the community for southern neighborhoods in Louisville.
Nomination: Not only has Liz started a grassroots program for her neighborhood association, she has also taken a leadership role in helping to clean up the Preston Highway corridor. She also wrote a children's book with proceeds going to pay for the design of artwork for an area railroad viaduct.
Shirley Hill, District 11, Buechel
Shirley Hill has lived in Metro Louisville all her life and in Buechel for over 50 years. She has two children and four grandchildren. Buechel Park is an older, family-oriented area that she would like to see improve to keep it a fun, safe place for residents. She also wants businesses to stay involved in the area and preserve the rich history of Buechel.
Nomination: Shirley goes out of her way to help and understand the needs of her neighbors. She is always willing to listen to neighbors and cares very much about them. They care about her as well. When there is a death in the family, they know Shirley will visit at the funeral home and share in their grief. When neighbors have questions or concerns they know they can call Shirley at home. She is there working for her neighbors and neighborhood and "seems to be a full time volunteer" with lots of time commitment.
Orville Griffin, District 12, Hunters Point
Orville Griffin has lived in the Louisville area since 1967 and in the Hunters Point neighborhood since 1992. He has been married for 38 years and has two children and three grandchildren. He has worked for the Ford Motor Company for 34 years and retired from the Army Reserves. He is the coordinator of many charitable programs. He also coordinated the annual Christmas program where about 500 needy children have Christmas with the employees. He is treasurer of the Hunters Point Neighborhood Association and believes that good neighborhoods improve the lives of families and children.
Nomination: Orville is an active volunteer of the Hunter's Point Neighborhood Association where he is treasurer. Mr. Griffin has even gone to court to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood as well as providing food for the elderly and the disabled.
Ted and Debbie Hollkamp, District 13, Fairdale
Ted and Debbie Hollkamp moved adjacent to the Jefferson Memorial Forest in 1997 and enjoy the area for its natural beauty. He works for the United States Postal Service as a rural letter carrier and was a Fairdale volunteer firefighter for 30 years. Debbie grew up in Fairdale and served on the Fairdale Youth Council and the Fairdale Youth Advisory Committee. She is currently self-employed. They started rescuing abandoned kittens after people started dropping them off in the forest. They would like to see fewer abandoned animals and more spaying or neutering. They would also like to see Fairdale maintain its small town appeal and friendliness while becoming the gateway to the forest with more restaurants and small shops.
Nomination: Ted and Debbie are described as wonderful, giving neighbors using their time and money to make their neighborhood a better place to live. They have a long history of volunteer efforts that include working with scout groups, the Fairdale Volunteer Fire Department, and rescuing pets that have been abandoned. They also take care of neighbor's homes and pets when they are on vacation. You will also always find them with a smile on their faces.
Emil Fehler, District 14, Valley Station
Emil Fehler has lived in Louisville his entire life and he and his wife, Norma, have been married for 62 years. They have two children and six grandchildren. He is an army veteran and worked at B.F. Goodrich for more than 32 years. He volunteers at his church and is involved in the maintenance of a nearby ball field. He was a volunteer firefighter for 47 years, working in Pleasure Ridge Park and Lake Dreamland. This included eight years on the board of directors.
Nomination: Emil does repairs for neighbors and maintenance at an area ball field. He also volunteers many hours at the area fire department.
Kimberly Ann Childress, District 15, Oakdale
Kimberly Ann Childress has been a resident of Louisville her entire life and has lived in Oakdale the majority of that time. Her goals for the next five years are to continue to improve the quality of life for Oakdale's residents and continue to build a strong neighborhood association that will build community and foster a safe, stronger, more livable neighborhood.
Nomination: Kim is a dynamo when it comes to the Oakdale Neighborhood Association and is tireless in the pursuit of a high quality of life for all residents of Oakdale. She works with schools, police, South Louisville Business Association and other agencies to build a stronger community and empower the citizens of Oakdale. Kim is a graduate of New Direction's Neighborhood Institute, active in the neighborhood watch and takes time to run errands for neighbors who are homebound.
Nell J. Foresman, District 16, Green Springs
Nell J. Foresman came to Louisville in 1955 and moved to Green Springs in 1984. She has two sons and four grandchildren and retired from the Louisville Water Company after 33 years. She likes ballroom and tap dancing. She walks on Wolf Pen Branch Road, picking up litter, recycling some items and discarding the non-recyclables. She would like to encourage others to be more aware of the importance of the environment.
Nomination: Nell is a member of the litter-free force of District 16. She has pledged her diligence to ensure that Wolf Pen Branch Road is clean and free of debris and remains a scenic venue for the community. She is an avid recycler and believes that freeing our community of litter is a matter of personal responsibility. Nell believes that by dedicating her efforts to keeping her area clean it reflects her devotion to the country and environment. She does all this without desire for recognition or reward and, at the age of 71, continues to dedicate herself to keeping our community clean and green.
Brent and Vicki Harris, District 17, Westwood
Brent and Vicki Harris have lived in Louisville for 19 years and in Westwood for the last four. They have been married for 26 years. Brent has worked with E.ON U.S. for five years as a telecom engineer. Vicki has been a preschool director and Mother's Day Out coordinator at Westport Road Baptist for 11 years. They have 2 sons. They would like to see more neighborhood events and increased volunteerism.
Nomination: Brent and Vicki are a dynamic duo that selflessly give their time to organize Westwood's Independence Day celebration. The have organized the event for several years, coordinating awards while planning the day's festivities. Vicki organizes while Brent cooks. He prepares barbecue and organizes the entertainment of patriotic music. They are an invaluable team to Westwood and District 17, spreading goodwill and uniting neighbors through their selfless gifts of time and caring.
Wendell and Louise Hawkins, District 18, Foxboro
Wendell and Louise Hawkins have been married for 54 years, and have lived in Middletown's Foxboro subdivision since 1992. Wendell retired in 1985 after 32 years with the Lorillard Corporation while Louise was a substitute teacher, a Sears employee and a church organist/pianist. They have one daughter and one grandson. "Love thy neighbor" has been a priority wherever they have lived. They assist their neighbors with various tasks. In the future, they are interested in seeing streets repaved and the pool renovated.
Nomination: Wendell and Louise are the kind of neighbors you want as they are willing to help out with those seemingly small things that can be so important. When neighbors leave town, they water flowers, take in mail and take out the trash. They are considered good friends as well as good neighbors. They care about their property, watch out for their neighbors and their homes and are friendly to everyone.
James L. Cattina Sr., District 19, Blue Ridge Manor
James L. Cattina Sr. grew up in the Beechmont community and has lived in Blue Ridge Manor for 30 years. He retired in 1989 after a career in teaching and counseling. He and his wife have been married for 46 years and have four children and seven grandchildren. Their family became involved in the community through church activities, school functions, sports and developing friendships. They follow the "love your neighbor as yourself" philosophy and are fortunate to have good wonderful neighbors.
Nomination: James brings neighbors mail to their doors, takes the garbage can to the street and returns it when emptied. During snowfalls he has checked on neighbors to make sure that they have groceries and supplies. He shovels snow, cuts grass, trees and bushes to help in the neighborhood. He is friendly and encouraging with children in the neighborhood. He has impromptu ice cream parties and invites neighbors to his house. Jim lives near the neighborhood park and he is a volunteer supervisor looking after small children.
Diane M. Nelson, District 20, Springview
Diane M. Nelson is a life-long resident of Louisville, and has lived in Springview for 13 years. As a child, she was taught to give back to the community. She is vice president of the Buddeke Co. and River Road Terminal. She built her first house in Springview, a new neighborhood with much potential until neglected by the developer and left to deteriorate. She would like to return the entrances to their original beauty, get neighbors to take pride in their homes and come together as the community they hoped for years ago.
Nomination: Diane has a great attitude and is always willing to help others. She helps maintain a common area within the neighborhood on a weekly basis, without regard to time or cost. She started a new neighborhood association and attends all the meetings. When an obstacle is placed in her path she just works around it.
Rosemary Hauck McCandless, District 21, Kenwood Hill
Rosemary Hauck McCandless came to Louisville in 1974 and taught school for 30 years before retiring. She moved to South Louisville 26 years ago and fell in love with Iroquois Park. She became involved with the Iroquois Neighborhood Association and hopes to see a downzoning process become a reality. She wants a designated conservation neighborhood and plans to be active in the process. She wants to preserve Colonial Gardens, the sight of the city's first zoo and the Little Loomhouse.
Nomination: Rosemary has dedicated her life to the service of others and goes out of her way to help her Kenwood Hill neighbors by assisting them. This includes helping take their garbage or yard waste to the curb. She also plants and maintains a common area flower garden on the corner that the neighbors now affectionately call "Rosemary's Triangle." She is working on a book about the history of neighborhoods in the Iroquois area and has conducted oral history interviews with current and former residents.
Carolyn Shake Fisher, District 22, Fern Creek
Carolyn Shake Fisher has lived in Fern Creek all her life and graduated from Fern Creek High School. She and her husband have two sons, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She has worked in the medical profession for more than 50 years and still works a few hours per week. She wants to see a neighborhood where residents reach out to know and help others. They have that kind of relationship on their street and feel that they are fortunate to have such loving and caring neighbors.
Nomination: Carolyn has set a good example of what a woman, wife, mother, professional and good neighbor should be. She is a friend to everyone on the street and has helped many family members. She helps out in the neighborhood by chauffeuring, cooking, grocery and medicine shopping and visiting. She expects no recognition or money and does it because she believes in the spirit of community.
Luna O. Hoskinson, District 23, Glencoe
Luna O. Hoskinson has lived in the Louisville area 82 years, the last 16 years in her current neighborhood. Married for 60 years, she has three children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. After retiring from Ford Motor Co., she began volunteering with The Dream Factory and now volunteers with Dare to Care Food Bank. She assists friends and neighbors and maintains the integrity of her neighborhood.
Nomination: Luna provides many volunteer services to Dare to Care Food Bank such as sorting food items and helping with special events. Her past service and dedication includes nine years at The Dream Factory, serving on their board of directors for seven years and working at a Crusade for Children fundraising event for thirty years.
Carol Lee Whiteside, District 24, Okolona
Carol Lee Whiteside has lived in Louisville all her life and, with her husband of 44 years, has lived in Okolona since 1965. They have three daughters and five grandchildren. She has been a stay-at-home mother and homemaker and has volunteered with PTA, school tutoring, helping out with Okolona Little League and volunteering at her church. She tries to be a good neighbor to everyone. Many young families are starting to move into her neighborhood and she looks forward to meeting them and watching their children grow up in a safe and happy environment.
Nomination: Carol helps her elderly neighbors on a regular basis by mowing their grass, cleaning up their property, and taking them to the pharmacy, hairdresser and grocery store. She even calls family members when she observes health problems. Carol is always willing to pitch in for neighbors by running errands, but mostly she takes time to listen to her neighbors.
Catherine Cunningham, District 25, Riverside Gardens
Catherine Cunningham has lived in Louisville for 12 years and loves it here saying, "The people are great." Her uncle was an officer with the Louisville Police Department. She enjoys working with the District 25 Metro Council office and also helped resolve a bad landlord situation. She wants to continue to help her community in any way she can.
Nomination: Catherine was the unanimous choice of the committee because of her unrelenting, grassroots efforts to improve the quality of life in her neighborhood. This is truly indicative of a Good Neighbor.
Judith L. Kaleher, District 26, Wellington
Judith L. Kaleher grew up in Louisville and has been a resident in Wellington since 1990. She has two children, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She worked for a bank for 22 years and recently retired from Bellarmine University. Wellington has an active Neighborhood Watch and she participates as co-captain. She wants to update the sidewalks to meet current accessibility standards and is also interested in eliminating vandalism and break-ins through education.
Nomination: She takes friends to doctor's appointments and took a neighbor to the emergency room. She also takes neighbors to get groceries and checks on them when needed. She clears snow from sidewalks and cuts grass for her neighbors.
