2006 Mayor's Neighborhood Summit Workshops in Detail

9:30 - 10:45 a.m.    Concurrent Workshops - A
Led by neighborhood leaders and professionals, these workshops encourage interactive presenter-participant dialogue and information sharing. Choose one of the workshops below:

A-1 Faith-Based Organizations and Neighborhood Partnerships
What can the best working relationships between faith communities and neighborhood organizations look like? Participants will discuss partnerships and relationships between faith-based organizations, churches and resident-based organizations that work on building stronger communities.

A-2 Understanding Binding Elements
This presentation will focus on the creation of binding elements (conditions imposed on a development plan) during the development approval process and will include information on binding elements, their legal basis and binding element enforcement issues.

A-3 The ABCs for Developing the Next Generation of Leaders
This session will highlight the strategies, activities and concepts to engage and motivate youth leadership in your community. A focus will be on equipping young adults with the tools for success in becoming vigorous neighborhood leaders.

A-4 Stepping Into a Leadership Role
What are the skills necessary to become an effective leader? Learn how to prepare for a leadership position and how to delegate assignments from current association presidents.

A-5 Turning Strangers into Neighbors – Strengthening Your Neighborhood through Diversity
Diversity is an opportunity waiting to be explored. Learn how to attract new members to your organization and engage their participation.

A-6 3 Digits at Your Fingertips – 211, 311 and 911
Learn from the experts how to best utilize these important services. Representatives from the United Way 211, MetroCall 311 and MetroSafe 911 will give you the “411” on their program function.

A-7 Neighborhoods and Business Associations Working Together in Corridors of Opportunity
This session will emphasize the benefits and advantages of successful collaborations and partnerships between businesses and their neighborhood associations and leaders that can be formed and succeed. Panelists will spotlight successful collaboration throughout Louisville Metro.

A-8 Bicycle-Friendly Louisville
This workshop will focus on Louisville’s Bike Friendly Plan and the strategies that have been developed to make bicycling in Louisville even safer and more accessible for residents of all neighborhoods. Louisville was recently designated a Bicycle-Friendly Community at the Bronze level by the League of American Bicyclists.

A-9 Yes, In My Backyard: An Action Guide for Planned Diversity
Louisville is changing and becoming more diverse in culture. Yet we are experiencing a loss of middle class neighborhoods at the same time that development is taking place. This session is designed to inform neighborhood leaders about the changing demographics that will take place, to break myths about people who are the workforce of the future and how to welcome and plan for inclusion of new families so the community continues to thrive.

Led by neighborhood leaders and professionals, these workshops encourage interactive presenter-participant dialogue and information sharing. Choose one of the workshops below:

B-1 Understanding Form Districts
Louisville Metro uses form districts in its zoning/development code to govern the pattern and use of land. This session will highlight the different classifications of form districts, show examples and discuss how form districts are applied. The main focus of the session will be an interactive activity in which participants will design a site based on traditional form district standards.

B-2 Web Site Creation and Promotion
Learn informative steps and resources to promoting your neighborhood or homeowner association via the internet. This class will accentuate the benefits of showcasing your community, by giving practical examples of cost-effective avenues in promoting your area.

B-3 Let’s Get Green
Interest is growing in landscaping with native and other beneficial trees, shrubs and ground covers. Homeowners are choosing plants that blend beauty and environmental benefits. People are selecting safer alternatives to chemicals used indoors and out. Many of these environmental benefits also save time and money. This workshop will introduce new environmentally-friendly landscaping tips which beautify your home and neighborhood, yet help you reduce water, fertilizer and pesticide use.

B-4 Promoting Your Neighborhood on a Shoestring Budget
This presentation includes examples on how local neighborhood associations have been successful in promoting their associations on a small budget.

B-5 Study Circles – Moving from Dialogue to Action
Experience a sample study circle in this interactive workshop. Learn more about study circles – facilitated small group discussions to consider all sides of an issue, listen and share views, and look for new solutions.

B-6 Self-Sustaining Neighborhoods Organizing for Success
Learn how neighborhood organizations are taking the lead in providing streetlight and trash collection services to area residents. Neighborhood organizations not included within the urban boundaries or homeowner groups are proactively working to have street lights turned on and reduce the collection rates for waste services.

B-7 Downtown – Everyone’s Neighborhood
Louisville and other large urban cities have learned that the health of their economy and their neighborhoods is threatened if their downtown fades away. Downtown Louisville is an economic hub, employing more than 65,000 workers and experiencing more than $800 million in recent development. This workshop will provide an update on downtown initiatives and explore how investing in downtown benefits the entire metro area.

B-8 Government 101
This workshop includes the basics on local government, including helpful tips and information on how your organization can work with local government.

B-9 An Issue-Based Coalition – United Voices are Strong
Meet with members of Airport Neighbors’ Alliance, Inc. as they celebrate 10 years of achievement. This coalition of neighborhoods and small cities that surround the airport will discuss their concerns, challenges and accomplishments of the last decade.
