Abramson Seeks Louisville’s ‘Good Neighbors’

Deadline is July 18

Mayor Jerry Abramson is looking for the best of Louisville’s good neighbors to recognize with the Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award.

“These awards honor the people in our community who make our hometown feel more like home,” Abramson said. “Whether it’s running errands for a sick friend next door, planting flowers at the entrance of a subdivision or keeping a sharp eye on crime, there are many unsung heroes making a difference in Louisville that we want to recognize.”

For the third year, the Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award will be presented to 26 citizens who demonstrate the spirit of good citizenship by going above and beyond to help others or who participate in volunteer activities that improve the community. Panels of community leaders will review nominations and select one winner from each of the city’s 26 districts. Judges will review nominees from outside their own geographic area.

Past Good Neighbor Award recipients were everyday people who did a variety of good deeds to make Louisville a better place to call home. Among the past winners are neighbors who were inspired to start helping others as a way to cope with their grief over the loss of a child. Another winner walked his neighborhood every morning, checking houses and picking up trash. One man sold his car to buy drums for young people in his neighborhood to encourage them to learn music and stay out of trouble.

Anyone may nominate their neighbor by completing and returning a form to the Louisville Metro Department of Neighborhoods by 5 p.m., Friday, July 18. Nomination forms are available by calling MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000 or register online by visiting www.LouisvilleKy.gov/neighborhoods.

Mayor Abramson will host a special dessert reception honoring the Good Neighbor Award winners on National Neighborhood Day, Sunday, September 21 at 3 p.m.

This year’s celebration will be at Memorial Auditorium, 970 S. Fourth Street.
